In addition to directing fan-favorite films like The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, Misery and Stand By Me, Rob directed the 2015 movie Being Charlie, which his son Nick cowrote loosely based on his personal struggles with addiction and drug abuse.
“It’s not my life,” Nick told People in 2016, “I went to a lot of these places, so I had a lot of these stories.”
The 32-year-old also detailed the difficulties he faced amid his battle with addiction, which included 17 stays in rehab facilities and bouts of homelessness.
“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting,” he explained, “then I had to be homeless.”
“Having to deal with that stuff made me who I am now,” Nick continued, “Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family. But there was a lot of dark years there.”
