Following the tragic passing earlier this week of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, several of his films have experienced a surge in viewership on streaming platforms. Among these is the courtroom drama A Few Good Men, released during what is widely regarded as one of the best streaks for any filmmaker in history. The film starred Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore, and remains a classic in the courtroom genre. It received widespread acclaim and was a significant box office success. According to FlixPatrol, A Few Good Men re-entered Apple’s domestic charts just a day after Reiner’s death, alongside his landmark comedy When Harry Met Sally, and the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap.
A Few Good Men was released in 1992, at the conclusion of an extraordinary run that began in 1984 with This Is Spinal Tap, followed by the coming-of-age film Stand By Me, the fantasy film The Princess Bride, the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, and the psychological thriller Misery. Produced on a reported budget of million, A Few Good Men grossed over $240 million at the global box office. The movie was adapted by Aaron Sorkin from his own 1989 play. Reiner and Sorkin would later collaborate on the romance drama The American President, featuring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. Critically acclaimed, A Few Good Men went on to earn four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
Rob Reiner Worked with Jack Nicholson Again On a Massive Blockbuster
The film currently holds a “certified fresh” 84% score on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus states, “An old-fashioned courtroom drama with a contemporary edge, A Few Good Men succeeds on the strength of its stars, with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and especially Jack Nicholson delivering powerful performances that more than compensate for the predictable plot.” A co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, Reiner directed other hit films such as The Bucket List, which earned over $175 million worldwide. He balanced his directing career with a robust array of acting roles; he notably appeared in Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street, which grossed more than $400 million globally. Reiner’s last film was Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. May his memory be a blessing.
