Several rock and metal bands have achieved at least moderate success with a third singer.
While most bands experience lineup changes, the impact is often most noticeable when the singer is replaced, as they are typically the face and voice of the group.
For some bands, like AC/DC, such changes have proven beneficial, even if fans were initially skeptical. A few groups have even reached new heights of success after introducing a new vocalist for the third time.
Unfortunately, this has not been the case for every band. Others have struggled to attain the same level of success as they had with their previous vocalists — and some bands have cycled through so many singers that it resembles a game of musical chairs (but with vocalists).
While we can’t blame them for continuing and exploring new directions, it’s worth noting that several major bands are absent from the list below because their releases featuring third singers actually diminished their overall popularity.
We compiled a list of bands that managed to find success with their third singers, which you can see below. A few of these groups had even more vocalists earlier in their careers, so we are only counting singers who appeared on official recordings (albums, EPs, or singles).
Thus, vocalists who only performed live with the band or on unofficial demo recordings are not included.
