Rock Band Submersible Mission to Titanic by OceanGate CEO

Allegations have emerged that the late OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush envisioned sending a prominent rock band to the depths of the Titanic wreck aboard his ill-fated submersible. This ambitious plan has sparked intrigue and speculation among fans and industry insiders alike.

A new documentary, titled Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster, premiered on Netflix on June 11, 2023. The film delves into the events leading up to the tragic final dive of the Titan, as well as the subsequent discovery of the wreckage at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. This gripping narrative serves as a chilling reminder of the risks associated with deep-sea exploration.

The Titan documentary features candid interviews with former employees of OceanGate, alongside insights from deep-sea exploration experts. Joseph Assi, a videographer brought on board by Rush to document these groundbreaking expeditions, revealed some of the unconventional ideas discussed at OceanGate, including the possibility of taking a music band on the submersible.

Assi shared, “They were seeking greater visibility, which is why we were involved. The sub they were constructing was rather rudimentary, so the concept was to create videos that would draw public interest.” His comments highlight the innovative yet risky marketing strategies employed by OceanGate.

Among the wild ideas floated was the notion of inviting the legendary band Pearl Jam to join the expedition, as well as discussions about a fantastical floating city capable of submersion. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Rush had any personal affinity for Pearl Jam or that OceanGate reached out to the band regarding such an endeavor.

Understanding the Catastrophic 2023 Titan Submersible Incident

On June 18, 2023, Stockton Rush and four other passengers—including renowned French deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani-British businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son Suleman Dawood—set out on a daring expedition to explore the Titanic wreck, which lies more than 12,500 feet beneath the surface of the northern Atlantic Ocean, aboard OceanGate’s Titan submersible.

The design of the Titan featured domes crafted from a robust titanium alloy, while its hull was constructed with a combination of carbon fiber and reinforced plastic, showcasing advanced engineering intended for deep-sea pressure. This innovative design was crucial for the submersible’s mission to traverse the depths of the ocean safely.

Tragically, less than two hours into their descent, the OceanGate crew lost all communication with the Titan. After an extensive four-day search, debris was uncovered on the ocean floor, confirmed to belong to the Titan. The findings indicated that the submersible had imploded, resulting in the instantaneous loss of all five individuals aboard.

The Titan’s Successful Journeys to the Titanic Wreck Before the Tragedy

Remarkably, the Titan had completed 13 successful missions to the Titanic wreck prior to its catastrophic implosion in June 2023. The Netflix documentary captures breathtaking footage of Stockton Rush and various passengers within the submersible, alongside stunning visuals of the historical shipwreck.

However, throughout the documentary, audio clips of ominous “banging noises” recorded during the expeditions suggested that the structural integrity of the carbon fiber was deteriorating, indicating that the hull was under significant stress. Rush had described these sounds as critical warning signs, signaling the need to ascend back to the surface promptly.
