Among those paying their respects is the Beach Boys themselves, who have shared a touching message reflecting on Wilson’s significant impact on their lives and music.
Al Jardine, a fellow bandmate, shared, “Brian Wilson, my friend, my classmate, my football teammate, my Beach Boy bandmate, and my brother in spirit, I will always feel blessed that you were in our lives for as long as you were.” He added, “The most comforting thought right now is that you are reunited with Carl and Dennis, singing those beautiful harmonies once again. You were a humble giant who always made me laugh, and we will celebrate your music forever. Brian, I will deeply miss you, but I hold the warmth of the sun within me tonight.”
Prominent members from iconic bands like the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, and Toto have shared their condolences, alongside music legends such as Elton John, Bob Dylan, Chicago, Ringo Starr, Steve Perry of Journey, Graham Nash, and Kiss co-founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, among many others. The Kinks’ Dave Davies expressed his devastation upon hearing about Brian Wilson’s passing, stating, “He had such a profound effect on me. The Kinks played the Hollywood Bowl with the Beach Boys on our first U.S. tour. Years later, Brian and I would run into each other at the movies with our daughters, and we’d catch up. I’m heartbroken. I adored his singing. He was an innovator, and his writing prowess was remarkable. I loved him.”
Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive stated that he has known the Beach Boys since the mid-1960s and has performed numerous shows with them. “They were the American answer to the Beatles. They captivated everyone with their songs, intricate structures, and vocal harmonies – the quintessential sunshine sound. I remember when Brian decided to stop touring but continued to create incredible music. The Beach Boys felt like family.”
Brian Wilson’s death, following a diagnosis of dementia, comes just two days after the passing of Sly Stone, who also left us at age 82. Ron Wood lamented, “Oh no, Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week – my world is in mourning. It’s so tragic.” Vernon Reid of Living Colour added, “Brian decided to split too,” while David Coverdale of Whitesnake remarked, “Another giant passes away.”
Brian Wilson was the final brother of the three original members of the Beach Boys to pass away, following Dennis in 1983 and Carl in 1998. Bachman reflected, “When Carl passed, it felt like losing a brother – and it feels the same today. They continue to thrive today with their incredible legacy, thanks to Bruce Johnston and Mike Love. We lost one of the greatest composers and messengers who took jazz harmony, fused it with a Chuck Berry beat, and created a new genre of music. Some of the best singles in history. Now Dennis, Carl, and Brian are all together again – singing in other worlds.”
