In the past month, numerous rock enthusiasts and devoted fans have come together to honor the legendary band Black Sabbath and the iconic Ozzy Osbourne following the band’s emotional Back to the Beginning concert and the recent passing of the Prince of Darkness. A remarkable tribute emerged from an unexpected source: the Band of the Coldstream Guards, who paid homage to Ozzy by performing the classic hit “Paranoid” during a recent Changing of the Guard ceremony.
Insight into the Coldstream Guards’ Tribute Performance
On Wednesday, July 30, as reported by Blabbermouth, the Band of the Coldstream Guards, an ensemble composed of talented musicians from The Royal Corps of Army Music and one of the esteemed 14 regular army bands within the British Army, delivered a stirring rendition of “Paranoid” during the Changing of the Guard event at Buckingham Palace.
A fan-captured video of this extraordinary moment (visible below) showcases the band’s orchestral interpretation of the beloved track from the 1970 album of the same name. This instrumental performance is particularly noteworthy, as various brass instruments emulate Ozzy’s iconic lead vocals, while a rich array of woodwinds, horns, and percussion lend their support, creating a dynamic and captivating sound. Remarkably, the three-minute arrangement encapsulates the essence of the entire song!
While the footage does not display any visible spectators, the enthusiastic cheers of the crowd can be heard, expressing their awe and appreciation as the performance concludes.
Similarly, social media reactions on platforms such as YouTube have echoed this sentiment, with many expressing their admiration for this unique tribute.
For example, one viewer commented on the YouTube clip, stating: “You know you’ve achieved greatness when the guards play your song. A tribute from one king to another.” Another user added: “I hope Sharon gets to see this. What a fantastic rendition. Thank you, everyone!”
The same video was also shared on TikTok, where one user expressed: “That was a beautiful performance and a heartfelt way to honor Ozzy Osbourne by playing one of his classic songs. Ozzy will always hold a special place in our hearts worldwide.” Meanwhile, on Instagram, one user remarked: “I’m sure Sharon and the family felt deeply honored by this royal tribute to Ozzy! Absolutely beautiful!”
This heartfelt performance by the Band of the Coldstream Guards was especially poignant as it coincided with the day of Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral procession, which took place in his hometown of Birmingham, England.
While this tribute might come as a surprise to some, it becomes more understandable when reflecting on Ozzy’s historical ties with the Royal Family. As Blabbermouth noted, he has had several interactions with British royals, including a memorable occasion in 2002 when he performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II. On that day, he delivered a rendition of “Paranoid” in front of the monarch, then-Prince Charles, and princes William and Harry during the Party At The Palace concert, celebrating the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
Furthermore, Blabbermouth reports:
King Charles, who was known as Prince Charles at that time, even sent Ozzy a bottle of whiskey following his quad-biking accident in 2003. “He’s a very, very nice man. He’s always treated me with the utmost respect,” Osbourne expressed in an interview with ‘The New York Post‘ ahead of the King’s coronation in 2022. “In fact, when I had my bike accident [in 2003], he sent me a bottle of scotch… I wish him all the best.”
