Russell Crowe’s Superhero Disaster Blocked by Netflix After 2 Years

Regardless of how you prefer your Russell Crowe — understated or mugging everyone in sight — it’s going to be an unfortunate April if you’re subscribed to Netflix’s ad-supported tier. Two of Crowe’s most recent movies have been blocked on the streamer’s ad-supported tier this month, according to What’s On Netflix. The first is Nuremberg, the World War II-set courtroom drama in which Crowe played Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring opposite fellow Oscar winner Rami Malek, who played an American psychiatrist. The other is a superhero movie that effectively ended a franchise on the most embarrassing of terms. The superhero movie was released theatrically in 2024 after significant delays. It was directed by an Oscar nominee and featured another Oscar winner in the cast alongside Crowe.

The film opened to poor reviews and underperformed significantly at the box office. It grossed around $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of approximately $120 million, which doesn’t include the millions that the studio probably spent on marketing. For context, this is a lower haul than those of Morbius, which grossed around $160 million worldwide, and Madame Web, which made around $100 million globally. Both those movies cost less than Crowe’s superhero dud, and incidentally, they also belong to the same franchise — Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. It was Sony’s attempt to mimic the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with which it continues to partner by producing and distributing the Spider-Man films.
