The iconic hip hop duo Salt-N-Pepa takes a stand against UMG by filing a lawsuit to reclaim ownership of their master recordings, aiming to regain control over their artistic legacy.
In a bold move, the talented female MCs initiated legal proceedings against the music industry giant in May, alleging that UMG is infringing upon federal copyright laws by refusing to return the rights to their music after the legally stipulated period has expired.
During a recent interview with Good Morning America, the duo elaborated on their ongoing legal battle.
Salt emphasized, “As artists, we entered into contracts that promised the return of our copyrights after a span of 35 years. We have meticulously followed all legal protocols to reclaim our copyrights. However, UMG continues to deny our requests, leaving us with no choice but to pursue legal action.”
She further expressed frustration, stating, “In the 80s, we lacked the leverage, knowledge, and control over our work. It’s absurd to be bound by a contract from 1985, and now, 40 years later, we’re still fighting for what’s rightfully ours.”
Pepa added her perspective, stating, “They want to retain ownership of our work. Their resistance to our claims clearly indicates they recognize the value of what we created together.”
In response to the lawsuit, UMG has attempted to have the case dismissed.
On a more positive note, Salt-N-Pepa are set to be honored with the Musical Influence Award at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, making history as the first hip-hop act to receive this prestigious recognition.
Pepa shared her excitement about the award, saying, “It’s an incredible honor, as it celebrates our entire body of work, not just a single hit. It reflects our journey, our legacy, and the impact we’ve made in the industry over the past 40 years.”
Salt added: “Authenticity, especially in the realm of art, is vital for longevity. I believe that’s a significant reason why audiences have connected with Salt-N-Pepa. We strive to be genuine, and I want to motivate women everywhere to embrace their true selves, pursue their dreams, and face challenges head-on. It’s crucial to break down barriers in all spheres of life.”
Salt-N-Pepa are not alone in their legal challenges against UMG; Drake has also initiated legal proceedings against his long-time record label, claiming defamation tied to the release of Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us.”
