Sci-Fi Reboot by Chris Pratt Makes $1.6 Billion Streaming Comeback

Set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth was intended to, as its title suggests, breathe new life into a franchise that had hugely disappointed in its last outing. Boasting a brand-new cast headlined by MCU favorite Scarlett Johansson, Gareth Edwards’ dino-blockbuster proved a huge hit in theaters, keeping up the franchise’s record of finishing the year as one of the highest-grossing movies. Alas, it didn’t manage to change the general feeling about the downward trajectory in the Jurassic World franchise’s quality, as critics delivered poor reviews.

In fact, to find a movie in the franchise that earned more than 50% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, you’d have to head back to 2015, with the Chris Pratt-led soft reboot landing a strong 72% score. Audiences also reacted well to the franchise’s long-awaited return, delivering a 78% score. The critics’ consensus on the site reads, “Jurassic World can’t match the original for sheer inventiveness and impact, but it works in its own right as an entertaining — and visually dazzling — popcorn thriller.”

At the time of writing, Jurassic World is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Peacock in the U.S. Also starring Bryce Dallas Howard, the 2015 return to the roaring success of this iconic franchise was penned by the trio of Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Colin Trevorrow, with the latter also directing. J.A. Bayona took over directing duties for 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, staying in the chair for the aforementioned critical flop Dominion.

‘Jurassic World’ Is One of the Highest Grossing Movies Ever

A 2015 theatergoing audience was hungry for more dino-stomping action following a 14-year break, and the box office results show it. Against a reported production budget of $215 million, Jurassic World earned an enormous $1.671 billion worldwide, split between a $653 million domestic haul and a further $1.017 billion from overseas markets. This makes the movie the eleventh highest-grossing movie of all time, having been knocked out of the top ten by 2025’s Ne Zha 2. A synopsis reads:

“Located off the coast of Costa Rica, the Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for an array of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinos to run amok. Now, it’s up to a former military man and animal expert to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault.”
