Renowned actors Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal have taken on the role of producers for the highly anticipated film “Secrets and Techniques of a Mountain Serpent” under their production company Pushing Buttons Studios. This remarkable film is poised to make its world debut at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, a significant event in the global cinema landscape.
The directorial vision of this captivating project is led by Nidhi Saxena, who was honored with the Venice Biennale School Fund grant, highlighting her exceptional talent and dedication to storytelling. Saxena previously directed “Sad Letters of an Imaginary Girl,” which had its premiere at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival, further establishing her reputation in the film industry.
“Secrets and Techniques of a Mountain Serpent” is co-produced in collaboration with Forest Flower Films, the production company founded by Vimukthi Jayasundara, a recipient of the Cannes Camera d’Or. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of a remote Himalayan town in the 1990s, this intimate drama centers around Barkha (played by Trimala Adhikari), a dedicated schoolteacher whose husband is stationed at the border. In a community marked by the absence of men and enveloped in silence, Barkha finds herself irresistibly drawn to Manik Guho (portrayed by Adil Hussain), a mysterious outsider who disrupts the delicate balance of waiting, restraint, and local mythology that governs her life.
Chadha and Fazal established Pushing Buttons Studios with a mission to promote authentic, emotionally resonant storytelling that captivates audiences. Their previous film, “Women Will Be Women,” directed by Shuchi Talati, garnered two prestigious awards at the Sundance Film Festival last year, showcasing their commitment to quality cinema.
In a joint statement, Chadha and Fazal expressed their deep admiration for Nidhi’s artistic vision, stating, “We were instantly captivated by Nidhi’s lyrical approach to storytelling. This narrative is steeped in mythology yet resonates profoundly with contemporary issues. At PBS, we are dedicated to supporting innovators who embrace creative risks, and Nidhi has crafted something that is not only unique but also profoundly poetic and soulful.”
Saxena, who is also the screenwriter for the film, elaborated on its themes, stating: “This film explores the journey of women who dare to risk everything to pursue their desires, shedding the oppressive burdens of societal moralities. I sought collaborators who share this vision, and it feels like a true convergence of minds and hearts. We no longer need to borrow male voices to share our stories; we possess our own powerful voice, firmly rooted in femininity.”
The production team has successfully completed principal photography and is currently in the crucial post-production phase as they prepare for the film’s upcoming premiere at the Venice Festival.
