Sensual Thriller Starring Kristen Stewart Perfect for Valentine’s Day

As Valentine?s Day approaches, it’s time to explore the ultimate queer thriller now streaming on Max, offering the perfect escape from traditional romance. What better way to embrace this holiday of love than by challenging heteronormativity and dismantling the patriarchy? Featuring a captivating performance by Kristen Stewart alongside Katy O?Brian, this film is Rose Glass?s remarkable sophomore effort titled Love Lies Bleeding. At its essence, the movie intertwines a gritty love story with a thrilling crime drama, but it also introduces unexpected fantastical elements that will surprise viewers. Fans of Glass’s debut film, Saint Maud, will recognize her unique style. With a stellar cast that includes Dave Franco, Jena Malone, and Ed Harris, Love Lies Bleeding deserves a spot on your Valentine?s Day watchlist.

Jackie (O?Brian) is the intriguing newcomer to a dusty, secluded Texas town with dreams of becoming a professional bodybuilder. Initially just passing through, her plans change when she lands a job at a local gun range owned by Lou Sr. (Harris). While preparing for a bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas, Jackie joins the local gym, managed by Lou Sr.?s daughter, also named Lou (Stewart). Their immediate chemistry ignites a passionate, sexually charged relationship, complicated by their mutual use of steroids. Meanwhile, Lou Jr. struggles to escape her father?s criminal legacy while fiercely protecting her sister, Beth (Malone), from the unpredictable rage of her abusive husband (Franco). This sets the stage for a gripping, sensual narrative fueled by steroids as the couple fights to maintain their bond and break free from the constraints of the Lone Star State.

Rose Glass Explores New Territory with ?Love Lies Bleeding?

After directing several short films, Glass took a significant leap in her career with the 2019 release of Saint Maud, a psychological horror film that solidified her unique voice in cinema. Not only did she direct, but she also crafted the screenplay, earning accolades at the BAFTAs for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. The film, starring Morfydd Clark of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, delves into themes of obsession and faith through the eyes of a devout caretaker determined to save her patient?s soul.

Having established herself as a formidable filmmaker with her debut, Glass was eager to shift gears and explore a completely different genre for her follow-up project. During the Sundance premiere of Love Lies Bleeding, she expressed her desire to take creative risks and push boundaries in her storytelling. Speaking with Collider?s Perri Nemiroff, she shared,

?I think going into it, I just knew that I wanted to try something different and take some risks and challenge myself. I knew I wanted to make something fun and kind of bombastic and pulpy. I didn’t have a clear view of the story yet.?

Audiences who tune in to the thriller on Max will undoubtedly see that Glass has succeeded in her mission, delivering a compelling and entertaining cinematic experience that captivates viewers.

Love Lies Bleeding is now available for streaming on Max.
