Seth’s Return on ‘The Rookie’: Showrunner Shares Updates

Seth Ridley, portrayed by Patrick Keleher, emerged as one of the most captivating characters in The Rookie Season 7. This deceptive trainee frequently ensnared others in his web of fabrications, concocting various tales to evade accountability for his actions. However, the repercussions of his dishonesty ultimately led to his suspension. Fortunately, he made a comeback as the series aimed to redeem his narrative. After heroically saving Nolan’s life, played by Nathan Fillion, Seth sustained an injury that abruptly ended his law enforcement career. Yet, fans are left wondering if there’s a chance for his return. The show has consistently found ways to reintroduce both beloved and contentious characters. “I don’t think this is the end,” expressed showrunner Alexi Hawley in an interview with TV Guide when questioned about Seth’s potential future on the show. “It’s still early. We’ve just started the [writers] room [last Monday], but I would love to see him return,” he noted. Hawley elaborated on how Seth could make a comeback:

“Finding Patrick as an actor was a delightful experience. He demonstrated an incredible ability to be endearing initially—almost like a Boy Scout—and then made subtle adjustments to transform his character into someone the audience genuinely disliked, showcasing his remarkable talent. The real challenge lies in whether a character like that can be redeemed. I find that concept fascinating. Ultimately, as Nolan points out in a pivotal scene, this may not signify the conclusion of his career with the Los Angeles Police Department. If he can pass the same physical tests required of any officer, even with a prosthetic, he could still pursue a career in law enforcement. Thus, I believe there is still a compelling story left to tell.”

Ensuring ‘The Rookie’ Remains Engaging and Innovative as It Approaches Season 8

Although it’s still early in the creative development process, after seven dynamic seasons, Hawley and his team have confidently found their rhythm. “Every season has felt unique to me,” he articulated when discussing the anticipated vibe of Season 8. “Several factors contribute to this uniqueness, including the events in the world around us. We’ve experienced a strike season, navigated a pandemic season, and confronted the challenges of producing a police drama following the tragic death of George Floyd. Each season has presented its own set of obstacles but also opened doors for new opportunities,” he explained. The Rookie continues to captivate audiences, boasting a robust following on social media platforms. Despite this popularity, Hawley candidly acknowledged that viewer reactions can sometimes influence the direction of storylines. “Our show carries significant stakes. From the very beginning, we’ve depicted real consequences and dangers,” he prefaced, adding:

“This reality prompts our audience to engage actively; they often express concerns online, saying things like, ‘Don’t you dare kill off… whoever!’ In truth, this creates a certain level of apprehension for us. It’s quite challenging in the television landscape. As you know, given the recent happenings with 9-1-1, fans are incredibly passionate about the series they cherish—naturally so. Yet, maintaining high stakes, introducing fresh elements, and incorporating enjoyable moments is crucial for our storytelling.”

Although The Rookie will not return until 2026, fans should stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates. Meanwhile, episodes are readily available for streaming on Hulu in the United States.
