As shows like Silo and Foundation are set to return in 2026, along with new titles like Neuromancer, Apple TV+ is poised to maintain its sci-fi dominance.
However, amidst these exciting updates about Apple TV+’s sci-fi future, there is a note of disappointment and concern. News surrounding one of the best sci-fi shows on the platform indicates that it may continue a trend that has previously hindered it.
Ben Stiller’s Severance Season 3 Production Update Suggests The Show May Continue A Worrying Trend
In a recent episode of The Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller & Adam Scott, Ben Stiller disclosed that Severance season 3 is currently being written and remains in pre-production. While it is positive that the next installment’s production is progressing, it appears to be moving at a slower pace.
Apple TV+ sci-fi shows like Silo have demonstrated an incredible turnaround time. After premiering in 2023, Silo is already two seasons in, with its next installment expected to release in 2026. Since seasons 3 and 4 of Silo have reportedly been filmed back-to-back, season 4 will likely debut in 2027, concluding the series.
Severance, on the other hand, premiered on Apple TV+ in February 2022. Despite being a hit and receiving widespread acclaim, it did not return for season 2 until early 2025. The fact that season 3 is still in pre-production suggests it will not be available on Apple TV+ before 2027.
The production update indicates that Severance will likely continue its trend of leaving significant gaps between seasons, which could adversely affect its reputation. Although the show is an exceptional addition to the sci-fi genre, it risks diminishing audience interest due to its slow turnaround time.
The Long Wait For Severance Season 3 Will Still Be Worth It
Given that Severance is one of the most intricate and layered sci-fi shows currently airing and relies heavily on attention to detail, it could face serious challenges if it keeps audiences waiting too long between seasons. Even if it maintains storytelling quality with each new season, viewers may struggle to follow its narrative beats and could lose the continuity that makes it compelling.

However, since Severance season 2 effectively compensated for the lengthy gap after season 1, it is hard not to believe that season 3 will also achieve similar success. If Severance season 3 manages to be released by early 2027, there will only be a two-year gap between seasons 2 and 3, which is quite acceptable for a show with such expansive storytelling.
The Apple TV+ series will still need to find innovative ways to remind audiences of everything that transpired in previous seasons before launching into season 3 since much has unfolded in its storyline thus far.
