Shark Thriller: Kathryn Newton Teams Up with Netflix Star

The rising star power of Kathryn Newton continues to impress audiences as the talented actress, known for her role in The Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, has landed another significant role in an exciting new shark thriller titled Devil’s Mouth. In this gripping film, Newton will portray a character fighting for survival against a relentless aquatic predator that is ominously compared to the devil itself. She will not be alone in her battle against the terror of the deep, as Lana Condor, the breakout star from To All The Boys I've Loved Before, has also joined the cast. Devil’s Mouth represents a major collaboration involving Amazon MGM and Lionsgate, marking Newton’s second project with Amazon following the critically acclaimed time-loop romance The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, which debuted on Prime Video and received positive reviews.

In what promises to be a thrilling and innovative take on contemporary shark horror, reminiscent of the modern classic 47 Meters Down, Devil’s Mouth will feature Newton and Condor as two college best friends whose vacation in Thailand spirals into a perilous situation. Their underwater escapade soon leads to a catastrophic incident, trapping them in a submerged cave system while a ferocious bull shark stalks their every move. Faced with the dire need for cooperation and unity to survive, the duo instead finds themselves embroiled in a power struggle, as lingering grudges and unresolved tensions come to the surface. Will they manage to set aside their differences and navigate their way back to safety, or will their fractured friendship ultimately lead them directly into the jaws of danger, the devil’s mouth?

Meet the Creative Team Behind ‘Devil’s Mouth’

The screenplay for Devil’s Mouth is crafted by the talented writing duo of Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner, both of whom have an impressive portfolio of acclaimed projects. Gabel is known for her work on the biographical miniseries The Staircase, while Wesner garnered attention for the popular crime drama series High Potential. Their original story first gained recognition on the 2019 Black List and captured the interest of Jeff Wadlow, who not only revised the script but will also direct the film. This collaboration promises to bring a unique vision to the screen, enhancing the film’s potential impact.

Wadlow’s diverse experience in the film industry includes several notable horror projects, showcasing his versatility as a director. He has collaborated with Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse Productions on multiple films, with his most recent effort being the supernatural horror movie, Imaginary (2024). Prior to that, he directed and executive produced the star-studded Halloween film, The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022). Wadlow is also recognized for his direction of superhero films like Kick-Ass 2 (2013) and Bloodshot (2022), which starred Vin Diesel. In addition to directing, Wadlow will produce Devil’s Mouth alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road Films, with Chelsea Kujawa representing Lionsgate and Carsten Lorenz serving as executive producer.

Kathryn Newton is quickly establishing herself as a prominent figure in the world of horror cinema. Last year, she showcased her talent in two well-received horror films, Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail, and she has recently secured a role alongside Samara Weaving in the highly anticipated sequel, Ready or Not 2. Meanwhile, Lana Condor has been busy with her recent project, Valiant One, and is set to appear next in Tubi’s Worth the Wait, the action-thriller Ballerina Overdrive, and the upcoming Warner Bros. film, Coyote vs. Acme, which has been eagerly awaited by fans.
