Sinestro Design Unveiled for Green Lantern’s New Look

2026 is set to be the year of Green Lantern, largely thanks to the upcoming HBO DCU TV series, Lanterns, which will spotlight GL Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Fans also have confirmation that the iconic Green Lantern villain Sinestro will be making his debut in the series, with actor Ulrich Thomsen portraying the character. While fans are still waiting for the design reveal of Thomsen’s Sinestro, DC has officially released Sinestro’s design for their latest Green Lantern project.

DC Comics has recently been making waves due to James Gunn’s takeover of the DCU, and the hype has also extended to the publisher’s Absolute comic titles, which have reimagined its most iconic characters in the new Darkseid-created Absolute Universe. This has come with new designs and origin stories for heroes and villains alike.

Even Superman Knows One DC Villain Is 3x Stronger Than Him

Few DC characters can match Superman in strength, but even the Man of Steel recognizes that one villain surpasses him completely.

Among the Absolute titles is writer Al Ewing’s Absolute Green Lantern. Thus far, fans have seen major reimaginings of GL’s most iconic characters, including Hal Jordan, Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, John Stewart, Simon Baz, Hector Hammond, and more. Now, thanks to a preview for Ewing, artist Eleonora Carlini, and colorist Ivan Plascencia’s Absolute Green Lantern #13, fans are getting an official, in-narrative look at Sinestro’s Absolute Universe design.

The four-page preview for Absolute Green Lantern gives fans a notable look at Sinestro’s Absolute design, and right off the bat, it is clear that this look deviates from his classic design seen in mainstream continuity. While Sinestro remains recognizable by retaining his Korugarian appearance (red skin, pointy black mustache, and all), he also appears to be a cyborg.

While we don’t get a clear full-body view, he seems to be sporting a cybernetic eye and some wiring coming out of his left ear. Sinestro being a cyborg is further confirmed by a leaked image of the villain that appeared about six months ago, which gave a better look at his full design, showing a body that seemed to be primarily made of machine technology.

The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic peacekeeping force powered by the emotional spectrum. Each Green Lantern’s ring is fueled by a specific emotion. Which emotion powers the Green Lantern rings?

AHope
BCourage
CWillpower
DLove

<

✓ Correct! Willpower is the green light on the emotional spectrum, sitting at the very center. The Guardians of the Universe chose willpower because it is the most stable and disciplined of all emotions, making it the ideal force for a peacekeeping corps that spans 3,600 sectors of space.
<

✗ Your ring’s charge is low on that one! The answer is Willpower. Hope powers the Blue Lantern Corps, Love fuels the Star Sapphires, and Courage isn’t a force on the emotional spectrum. Willpower — the green light — is the foundation of every construct a Green Lantern creates.

< DHal Jordan

<
<

✓ Correct! Hal Jordan was introduced in Showcase #22 (1959), inheriting the ring from the dying alien Abin Sur. As a fearless test pilot, Hal was the perfect candidate — his indomitable willpower made him one of the greatest Green Lanterns in the history of the Corps.
<

✗ Your ring’s charge is low on that one! The answer is Hal Jordan. John Stewart is a fellow Earth Lantern and architect, Guy Gardner is the brash backup Lantern, and Kyle Rayner became a Lantern after Hal’s fall. But Hal Jordan is the test pilot from Coast City who defined the modern Green Lantern legacy.

This is an extremely interesting take on the villain, raising questions about how Sinestro became a cyborg in this universe as it deviates from his traditional characterization. The release date for *Absolute Green Lantern* #13 is April 8, 2026, so fans may find further explanations regarding Sinestro’s Absolute Universe origin within its pages. It will also be intriguing to see fan reactions to Sinestro’s new redesign.

The cyborg design initially appears quite cool. However, since several villains like Brainiac and Peacemaker have already received cyborg reimaginings in this Absolute Universe, some fans may find another villain getting a cyborg makeover contentious. Still, we have only seen glimpses of *Absolute Green Lantern’s* Sinestro so far, so there may be twists ahead that differentiate this cyborg reimagining from previous ones.
