Singer from Anti-Flag to Pay $2 Million in Assault Settlement

Former Anti-Flag vocalist Justin Sane, whose real name is Justin Geever, has been ordered to pay Kristina Sarhadi nearly million as a result of a sexual assault lawsuit that was initially filed in 2003. This judgment marks a significant legal outcome for Sarhadi, who has endured years of trauma stemming from the alleged incidents.

According to a report by Rolling Stone, Chief U.S. District Judge Brenda K. Sannes ruled on Tuesday, July 22, granting Sarhadi a default judgment. The court awarded her a total of $1,170,000 in compensatory damages, alongside an additional $750,000 in punitive damages aimed at holding Geever accountable for his actions.

Chronology of Events in the Justin Sane Sexual Assault Case

The troubling allegations against Justin Sane came to public attention in the summer of 2023. Speculation began circulating online, leading to the band’s decision to disband and erase their social media presence in July 2023. This drastic measure indicated the seriousness of the situation and the impact it had on the band.

Shortly thereafter, Sane took to social media to vehemently deny the sexual assault allegations against him, describing them as “categorically false.” He expressed that he has dedicated his life to advocating for victims of sexual violence, stating, “Sexual assault is real and has a devastating impact on victims. I have devoted my entire adult life to standing up for these victims as well as those suffering oppression and inequality, who are victimized, demeaned, and abused.” He concluded by asserting that the claims against him contradicted his lifelong beliefs and actions.

This public statement followed Sarhadi’s appearance on a podcast titled enough, where she shared her harrowing experience of being allegedly assaulted by the lead singer of a political punk band she once admired. Although she did not initially name the individual or the band, it did not take long for speculation to point toward Sane.

In the days following Sarhadi’s revelation, twelve additional women came forward with their own accusations of sexual assault against Sane, amplifying the gravity of the situation and further complicating his defense.

By September 2023, the remaining members of Anti-Flag issued a statement to Rolling Stone, expressing their belief that Sane was “very sick and in need of professional help.” They acknowledged their compassion for survivors and their desire for restorative justice, while also condemning Sane for the pain he inflicted on numerous individuals, not just those who had bravely come forward.

In November 2023, Sarhadi filed a formal lawsuit against Sane, claiming sexual assault and battery. She disclosed that she continued to suffer from frequent night terrors and suicidal thoughts as a direct result of the traumatic experiences. Despite numerous attempts to serve him with the lawsuit, Sane reportedly failed to respond formally.

Earlier this year, a portion of Sarhadi’s lawsuit that implicated Sane’s bandmates was dismissed by the court, but the case against Sane continued. Eventually, a clerk of the court determined that Geever was in default after Sarhadi’s attorney informed the court that “Geever is fully aware of the lawsuit and has transferred his assets out of the country, and plans to or already has fled the United States.” Although there were discussions between legal representatives from both sides, negotiations for a settlement ultimately fell through, leading to a lack of communication.

Tuesday’s ruling brings the case to a financial conclusion, but the emotional ramifications for all involved remain profound.

Kristina Sarhadi’s Reaction Following the Court’s Ruling

In her statement to Rolling Stone, Sarhadi expressed her frustration with Geever’s “silence, absence, and cowardice.” She conveyed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she received from fellow survivors after sharing her story, which has become a powerful narrative of resilience.

Reflecting on the judgment, she remarked, “Judge Sannes’ careful decision in my case feels like a beacon of hope in a time of emboldened misogyny and unchecked power.” Sarhadi acknowledged that while no amount of compensation can truly address the harms she has endured, she feels profoundly grateful for the validation that comes from being believed and witnessed.

She further asserted, “Geever’s silence, absence, and cowardice simply prove what I have known privately for 15 years: There are no heroes.” She emphasized the importance of recognizing that not everyone who holds a public platform deserves admiration. Additionally, she highlighted the presence of allies and supporters who stand with survivors, encouraging others to find the courage to speak out.

Looking ahead, Sarhadi anticipates that it may take “another decade or two” to heal the damage inflicted on her life. However, she expressed pride in every individual who has used this moment to reclaim their power, as well as pride in her own refusal to back down. She is deeply moved by the solidarity shown by survivors across the globe and is no longer heartbroken by Geever’s betrayal. Instead, she feels a righteous anger toward the escalating patterns of abuse and is even more determined to expose and disrupt these harmful behaviors.
