Skin Cancer Surgery Update for Joe Biden’s Health

Joe Biden is on the mend.

The former President is doing well after undergoing a procedure known as Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer from his head, his spokesperson told NBC News on Sept 4.

Though the spokesperson did not clarify when the 82-year-old received the procedure—which is used to treat basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common types of skin cancer, according to SkinCancer.org—he had a visible incision on his head during an outing in Delaware on Aug. 22.

Biden also had a cancerous skin lesion removed from his chest in 2023 following a routine physical exam.

“As expected, the biopsy confirmed that the small lesion was basal cell carcinoma. All cancerous tissue was successfully removed,” the former President’s physician Kevin O'Connor said in a memo at the time, per NBC News. “No further treatment is required.”

Beyond skin cancer, Biden revealed in May that he is currently battling an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.
