For those keeping an eye on the music scene, it’s no surprise that Sleep Token has become a polarizing topic of discussion, particularly around their classification as a metal band and other aspects of their artistry. Recently, former Bad Wolves guitarist and current member of Snot, Doc Coyle, defended the band against what he termed “pretentious gatekeeping” that has surrounded their rise to fame.

Coyle articulated his thoughts in an op-ed for Metal Hammer, where he acknowledged the “harsh and swift” backlash that Sleep Token has faced from both casual listeners of heavy music and professional critics following the commercial success of Even in Arcadia. He asserted, “Sleep Token’s offense is not in their artistic choices but in their audacity to become the most popular rock act on the planet through those very choices.”

He further elaborated:

I worry that we have become a society that discourages enjoying overtly pleasurable experiences. I genuinely enjoy Even in Arcadia. While its standout tracks may not reach the same heights as ‘The Summoning’ and ‘Chokehold’ from Take Me Back to Eden, I find it more satisfying as a cohesive album. I don’t hold any animosity towards those who dislike the album or the band; however, I am troubled by the coalitions formed to disparage popular heavy bands as a trend. This reaction feels like a knee-jerk contrarianism against what the masses enjoy. I don’t think that’s a favorable stance.

It frustrates me to see a pattern of tearing down successful acts. This reflects the sentiment of “why we can’t have nice things” in action. Disliking bands simply because they are popular is not a cool attitude; in fact, it represents another form of conformity and elitism. True fandom should embody passion, obsession, and unabashed earnestness. Unfortunately, we live in a time when sincerity is often perceived as cringe-worthy. Ultimately, it’s just music. While you certainly have the right to express negativity about these topics, it doesn’t mean it’s necessary. Embrace being an outsider. Embrace being a fan, and it’s perfectly fine to enjoy what brings you joy.

On the flip side, Latin soul singer Kali Uchis faced backlash for her social media comments, where she incorrectly alleged that Sleep Token engaged in “blackface” and committed unethical acts to achieve the number one spot with Even in Arcadia.

In particular, as reported by Loudwire, Uchis suggested on social media that Sleep Token manipulated sales to reach their impressive chart position. One commenter on her now-deleted post remarked, “Imagine being so petty that you censor the #1 band in an IG story. Sleep Token is far superior,” to which Uchis responded, “Honestly, I don’t feel comfortable posting a photo of someone in blackface. It really wasn’t deeper than that, darling.”
