Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green is set to take on a thrilling new role alongside Donnie Wahlberg in the highly anticipated CBS spinoff, Boston Blue, which expands on the beloved universe of the long-running series Blue Bloods.
Scheduled to premiere this fall, the storyline follows Detective Danny Reagan (played by Wahlberg) as he embarks on a significant career change, leaving behind his life in New York City and his family to join the Boston Police Department. He will partner with Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green), who comes from a distinguished law enforcement lineage, adding depth and intrigue to the series.
During a CBS press event, Martin-Green expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m gonna have to get a really good Boston accent, just so I can throw it out at times. We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. Being Detective Lena Silver, who is coming from a prominent law enforcement family, you will love the Silvers too. I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in the CBS family.”
Wahlberg also shared his thoughts, saying, “I’m incredibly grateful for the years on Blue Bloods, and incredibly grateful to be able to keep the traditional Blue Bloods alive and move it forward into a new world with new friends and new situations. We are really working on this universe in a way that I think the Blue Bloods viewers are gonna be very happy, very excited, and a whole new world of viewers are gonna be able to discover us, too.”
For dedicated fans of Blue Bloods, there is promise of familiar faces making appearances in Boston Blue. Wahlberg noted, “There’ll be connective tissue to the old family. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories while still honoring the Reagan stories.”
The original Blue Bloods series was among CBS’s highest-rated dramas, leaving a lasting impact on its audience. Many cast members expressed their desire for the show to continue. Tom Selleck, who portrayed Frank Reagan, the New York Police Department Commissioner, mentioned, “I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” adding, “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.” There’s speculation that he might make a cameo appearance in Boston Blue.
