“I just kind of started it to see what would happen.”
P.O.D. frontman Sonny Sandoval made an appearance on Loudwire Nights on Tuesday, February 18, to share insights about his highly anticipated memoir, Son of Southtown: My Life Between Two Worlds. This discussion covers not only his life journey but also his artistic evolution. Be sure to listen to the full enlightening conversation in the player located near the end of this article.

The title of Sandoval’s book encapsulates his unique experiences growing up as both a Christian and a rock star, navigating the complexities that come with these identities.
“As you read through the book, it becomes clear that I never intended to be part of the rock scene,” Sandoval explained to host Chuck Armstrong. His journey was not one he planned; it was a series of unexpected events that led him to where he is today. “It wasn’t until I found my faith that I felt compelled to speak out about it. I wanted those around me to see that I had changed and that my love for Jesus is genuine and not what the world often perceives it to be.”
For Sandoval, whether he is expressing himself through music or written words, it’s crucial that listeners and readers truly grasp his perspective on his deep faith in Jesus. He emphasized, “We’ve done such a poor job at conveying the true essence of Jesus ? and that’s something we need to address ourselves.”
“We often project an image as if we have everything figured out, but that?s not the case. That’s not the foundation of our faith. We need a God, and when I discovered Jesus, it became something I deeply desired to share with my friends and community,” he reflected, underlining the importance of authenticity in his message.
Initially, when Sandoval was invited to join a band, he was hesitant and declined the offer because it did not align with his initial aspirations. “However, I recognized that this could be a platform to express my beliefs, and it eventually flourished into what it is today,” he recounted, illustrating how opportunities can lead to unexpected paths.
While sharing his journey through the rock and roll lifestyle, Sandoval candidly revealed that comprehending the concept of the afterlife promised by his beliefs has not always been easy. “But that?s the essence of faith, isn’t it?” he admitted, acknowledging the struggles many face in such matters.
He further remarked, “I think faith has been encapsulated in a way that often leaves people with a bitter impression. I’m not here to preach to anyone, but should there be an afterlife, I certainly want to be on the right side of it. That?s my only concern.”
