As the fourth season of Bridgerton unfolds, the free-spirited Benedict Bridgerton loses his heart to the “silver ingénue” at Violet Bridgerton’s masquerade ball. It’s not until Episode 1’s end that the Lady in Silver’s true identity is revealed.
Her name is Sophie Baek, a hardworking maid with a hidden past. However, before joining Penwood House’s staff, Sophie lived a life of privilege as Lord Penwood’s ward, under his roof and care.
According to Merriam-Webster, a ward is someone under protection or guard, often a minor subject to wardship. In this context, Lord Penwood uses the term “ward” seemingly to assure Araminta he’s just Sophie’s guardian, nothing more. However, her stepmother’s cold response when she first meets Sophie suggests she’s not buying it.
“Sophie is the illegitimate child of Lord Penwood. Her mother was a maid,” portrayer Yerin Ha told Netflix Tudum. The earl accepted his daughter but referred to her as his “ward” to avoid scandal.
