Soundgarden’s Rock Hall Plans Remain Undisclosed: ‘It’s a High Bar’

Kim Thayil expresses the band’s enthusiasm for their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the prestigious 2025 class. However, he notes that the surviving members of Soundgarden are not yet ready to disclose specific details regarding their performance or involvement in the ceremony. This momentous recognition has been eagerly awaited, as Soundgarden first became eligible for induction back in 2012 and has been nominated on two previous occasions before finally receiving this honor this year. While it took over a decade for the band to receive their call to the Hall, their contemporaries in the grunge scene, such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, were inducted during their initial nominations.

With the long-awaited acknowledgment secured, attention now shifts to the potential performance by Soundgarden at the Hall of Fame ceremony. The band has not performed an official concert since the tragic passing of Chris Cornell in 2017. Nonetheless, the surviving members have come together on a few notable occasions, including the 2019 concert event titled I Am a Highway, which celebrated Cornell’s enduring legacy through a series of star-studded performances. During their set, notable guest vocalists such as Taylor Momsen and Brandi Carlile made memorable appearances. Momsen also joined the surviving members for a brief two-song performance at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert held in 2022.

Thayil reflects on the discussions around the potential performance, saying, “Sometimes ideas have been tossed out – sometimes as a lark, just general chatter among buddies, and sometimes as a more serious, sincere thing.” He emphasizes the high emotional and technical standards the band feels they must meet, explaining that the performance must resonate with the memory of their “missing brother and founder.” In addition, it is crucial to honor the legacy of Chris Cornell, including his profound creativity and contributions, as well as the respect they hold for each other as a band.

Thayil also recalls his younger years and his initial “aversion” to the concept of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He mentions that Chris Cornell and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, who was inducted into the Hall as a member of Pearl Jam in 2017, shared their insights about the experience. “Chris lived the experience and said the enthusiasm of the fans was eye-opening for him, and understanding how important that was — and Matt seconded it,” he explains, showing how their perspectives have evolved over time.
