Lucy Lawless has set her surprise return to the Spartacus franchise in a new clip from its upcoming sequel series, Spartacus: House of Ashur. The upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur tells a reimagined version of Ashur’s fate from the original series. This involves him becoming in league with Crassus, leading to a host of new challenges he needs to face.

Now, Deadline has released a clip from Spartacus: House of Ashur which sees Lawless return as Lucretia in the spinoff show. The clip reveals her confronting Ashur in the Underworld following his death in Spartacus season 2. While holding Ilithyia’s baby, she tells Ashur she’s setting him on a new life path, confirming she’s the catalyst for the spinoff.

Based on the clip, it appears the Gods have found favor in him so he’s not killed by Naevia at the top of Mount Vesuvius. Lawless’ return explains the new timeline, while also confirming the show will be following the same Ashur from the original series. It justifies how the spinoff is happening while also delivering a major character’s return.

In addition to the clip, creator Steven S. DeKnight explained the mindset behind having Lucretia be the reason behind Ashur’s resurrection in a new timeline. He called the Underworld scene “the impetus for the series,” while also explaining what it was like to work with Lawless again after such a long time. Check out what DeKnight said below:

Yes, the way in was through Lucy as Lucretia, who went over that cliff with the baby that she stole from Ilithyia. We can start in the Underworld when Ashur has just died, and Lucretia is there and says, “You know, there are many paths. Your death on Vesuvius was one of them, and would you like to see another? Would you like to live another life and see what would have happened and what kind of man you would have become?” That was really the impetus for the series.

She’s a pro, you know? She’s Lucy Lawless. I still pinch myself that I got to work with her the first time around. I’m such a big fan. And, yeah, she just stepped right back into it. She was fantastic. She and Nick always had a great working relationship. I feel that anybody else except Lucy Lawless as Lucretia would just not have felt right. It was just a perfect way to start a new series and tip our hat to the original.

Lawless’ Lucretia was last seen in the season 2 finale of Spartacus, where she jumped off a cliff with Ilithyia’s baby in tow, her final act after being abused by Ashur for such a long time. Her time on Spartacus was memorable because of her manipulative tactics for power and subsequent tragic end, making her a compelling, complex character.

Now, she’ll be joining the cast of Spartacus: House of Ashur to lay the groundwork for how the title character’s new timeline plays out. The show appears to be leaning more heavily into the supernatural with the clip’s revelation, too. While it’s unclear if Lucretia will come back beyond this scene, her presence will no doubt be felt across the show.

With the setup for Spartacus: House of Ashur revealed, it remains to be seen if Lucretia’s actions are a present or a punishment for the title character. All that’s certain is that with Ashur now in a new position of power in a different timeline, he could make a name for himself in ways that defy the history he was previously afforded.

Spartacus: House of Ashur premieres with two episodes Friday, December 5 on Starz.
