Star Wars Should Embrace Change After Kathleen Kennedy’s Exit

Star Wars is officially under new leadership following Kathleen Kennedy’s exit, and director Rian Johnson hopes the franchise does one thing under its new direction.

What are Rian Johnson’s Star Wars hopes?

Speaking to Variety during their Variety Studio session, Johnson — who directed 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi — was asked about Kennedy’s exit as head of Lucasfilm. In her place, longtime Star Wars creator Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan will take over. Johnson said that, as a big fan of Star Wars himself, he hopes that the franchise begins bringing in “fresh voices” to tell “new stories.”

“I love Kathy. I am excited now to see what she does next,” Johnson said. “As a Star Wars fan, the most exciting thing for me is always seeing when they bring in fresh voices and fresh filmmakers to come in and tell new stories in that world. That’s what I am looking forward to seeing more happen.”

Johnson’s entry in the Star Wars world is largely considered divisive, with The Last Jedi often being both criticized and praised for its attempt to move the franchise away from some of its more well-known stories. Despite the rocky relationship, Johnson said that he loved working on the film, and would be happy to do so again if the opportunity ever arose.

“I had the time of my life doing it. I am now an even bigger Star Wars fan than I was when going into it. I would feel blessed if that were to ever happen [again].”
