Starfleet Academy Fans Overlook Key Detail in Deep Space Nine Character’s Return

Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for Starfleet Academy Episode 5.

Star Trek characters frequently cross over from one show to another, whether through a brief cameo or a significant guest arc. Starfleet Academy follows this tradition, incorporating Star Trek: Discovery‘s Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) and Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) as well as Star Trek: Voyager‘s the Doctor (Robert Picardo) into its main cast. The fifth episode of the series takes it a step further by bringing back Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) for the first time in 27 years. Jake’s return pays tribute to his legendary father, Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), through a magnificent homage that is both long-awaited and overdue — and a subtle detail about this grown-up Jake strikes a bittersweet emotional chord.

What Does Jake Sisko’s Earring Mean in ‘Starfleet Academy’ Episode 5?

Although seemingly cheerful, cadet Sam (Kerrice Brooks) grapples with her identity and her predetermined purpose. She is not only the first sentient hologram to join Starfleet, but her people — the Kasqians — designed her to serve as a liaison between inorganic and organic life. In search of guidance, Sam begins studying historical emissaries and becomes particularly interested in Benjamin Sisko. The emissary for the Bajoran gods disappeared shortly after the Dominion War ended; over 800 years later, the Bajorans revere him as a religious figure while Starfleet considers him a cold case.

Professor Illa Dax (Tawny Newsome), Benjamin’s best friend and the guardian of Jake’s unpublished book about his father, recognizes Sam’s genuine curiosity and lends her Jake’s writings. Through reading his insights and conversing with a middle-aged Jake (thanks to some sci-fi wizardry), Sam gains the confidence she needs and an intimate understanding of Benjamin Sisko as a complex individual: a grieving widower, a cherished parent, a reluctant spiritual leader, an ethical officer facing moral dilemmas, and a baseball enthusiast from New Orleans.

A lot of character development can happen over three decades. Starfleet Academy subtly indicates Jake’s journey through costume design, particularly the single gold ring he wears throughout his appearance. Lofton confirmed that the adornment is Bajoran jewelry during a special episode of “The 7th Rule,” the Star Trek podcast he co-hosts with producer Ryan T. Husk. A recognizable symbol associated with Bajor’s devout faith, Lofton elaborated on the jewel’s significance:

“Part of the creative process was creating the look for what Jake would look like. So we agreed on a Bajoran earring because maybe he would have decided to get into Bajoran studies, and pay homage to how his father has now become this big icon. So I believe he would have adopted some of that into his persona.”

‘Starfleet Academy’ Finally Gives Benjamin and Jake Sisko the Recognition They Deserve

Unlike characters from other series, Deep Space Nine‘s crew has not been canonically explored beyond Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ delightful snippets. Through Jake and Illa, Starfleet Academy addresses some unresolved threads and serves as a beautifully tender affirmation of Brooks’ legacy. A courageous, empathetic, exquisitely nuanced, and revolutionary genre icon, Benjamin leads Deep Space Nine‘s seven seasons as the franchise’s first Black lead and captain, and he co-anchors one of television’s greatest parent-child relationships. The mature, vulnerable, and mutually supportive dynamic between Benjamin and Jake brings depth to the series’ emotional core; this heartbroken family faces an uncertain future together, drawing strength from one another while tentatively building a new home — a small harbor meant for two.

Jake’s future actions may be intertwined with his father’s legacy, but Starfleet Academy does not overlook the mystery of Benjamin’s disappearance at the expense of his beloved son. Instead of portraying him as a sullen teenager, Jake enters and exits Deep Space Nine as an evolving character on his own path of self-discovery — a young boy adjusting his aspirations while navigating self-doubt and isolation during the galaxy-wide Dominion War. After 27 years away from our screens, Jake has matured into a warm, wise, and fulfilled man. He has completed his book, become a parent himself, guides Sam with the same tender care his father showed him, and his deep connection to Bajoran spirituality is entirely fitting.

The return of Lofton is particularly delightful not merely as nostalgia but with purpose. He played an integral role in directing the episode, collaborating on Jake’s unseen years and the Bajoran earring design while creating attire inspired by Lofton’s Ethiopian heritage. He even incorporated elements from Brooks’ spoken word album in place of the retired actor’s own appearance. Lofton’s thoughtful involvement serves as a heartfelt tribute to their enduring friendship and their characters’ shared legacy.
