Starfleet Academy’s Closing Credits Shine in 60-Year Franchise

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1’s Finale – “Rubincon”Star Trek: Starfleet Academy did one particular thing better than the rest of Star Trek in its 60-year history. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi from a teleplay by Alex Kurtzman and Kirsten Beyer and a story by Noga Landau and Gaia Violo, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale, “Rubincon,” was a rousing and emotionally powerful finale that kept tugging on the heartstrings as the credits rolled.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale concluded the season-long saga between Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti), Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), and Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany). Nustopher’s attempt to destroy the United Federation of Planets with Omega-47 was foiled by Starfleet Academy’s cadets, Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), and The Doctor (Robert Picardo), using teamwork and science.

Some Star Trek fans online theorized that Anisha Mir would be revealed as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s true villain, and season 1 would end in tragedy for Caleb. Instead, “Rubincon” paid off the story that began in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s series premiere, giving Caleb, Nahla, Anisha, and the rest of the cadets a happy ending. But there was one more special surprise that put “Rubincon’s” ending over the top.

Closing Credits of Starfleet Academy Finale Were the Best Ever in Star Trek

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale ended with the best closing credits sequence in Star Trek history, showcasing the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s yearbook photos. Even better, the pics in the montage are the real childhood snaps of Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, Robert Picardo, Tig Notaro, and the younger cast, including Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, and Bella Shepard.

Star Trek‘s official social media shared Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s closing credits. Watch them below:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the 12th Star Trek TV series since 1966, but it’s the first to deliver closing credits like this, which blends the characters with the actors who play them, all set to the pitch-perfect track, “Beautiful Child,” by Rufus Wainwright. Starfleet Academy‘s credits make the characters feel even more genuine, and we feel as close to them as they do to each other at the end.

Most importantly, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale closing credits make the viewer feel good. More than any other Star Trek show, Starfleet Academy is about growth, change, gaining maturity, and accepting one’s potential. Showing the characters and actors in their youthful innocence isn’t just adorable but makes the viewer realize how far they’ve come and how bright their futures could be.

Special Closing Credits Are Rare in Star Trek

Star Trek isn’t usually known for special closing credits sequences. Star Trek: The Original Series ran its credits over still photos from the show, but the series in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s era ran credits over black with each show’s orchestral score. Generally, Star Trek didn’t give much emphasis to its closing credits throughout its 60-year existence.

Star Trek Finally Confirms Starfleet Academy’s Timeline & It’s A Surprise

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy definitively reveals when freshman year happens after Star Trek: Discovery, and contradicts what we previously believed.

The first truly special Star Trek credits sequence capped off Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The final film starring the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series featured the actors’ signatures on the screen, which was a literal sign-off for the legends who started it all. Star Trek VI‘s credits are so special, Marvel Studios copied them for Avengers: Endgame’s closing credits.

Before Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Star Trek: Picard season 3’s finale could boast the most uplifting and heartwarming closing credits sequence – and for Star Trek: The Next Generation fans, it still is. Director and showrunner Terry Matalas let Patrick Stewart and the legendary TNG cast play poker for real as he filmed their genuine camaraderie and banter while running the credits on the screen.

However, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s finale took it to another level with credits rolling that are sweet, heartwarming, funny, life affirming, and immediately makes the viewer miss the show and want to see Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 as soon as possible.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a special show about making the future of Starfleet (and Star Trek) a reality, and its credits reflect everything bright, positive, endearing, and aspirational about Starfleet Academy.
