If you, like many other Marvel fans, are eagerly anticipating the return of Tom Hiddleston’s beloved trickster, Loki, this one’s for you. While we are excited that the actor will reprise his role after seemingly concluding his story arc in the Season 2 finale of Loki, there are plenty of other fantastic titles from Hiddleston’s extensive catalog to enjoy in the meantime. One of those films, The Life of Chuck, recently celebrated its streaming debut in the U.S. on Hulu, where it has quickly risen in popularity and become a favorite on the platform’s Top 10. Despite being the most underrated Stephen King adaptation of 2025, the heartfelt film directed by Mike Flanagan is the perfect choice to start your New Year with a mix of laughter, joy, and existential reflection.

Working backwards, The Life of Chuck is structured into three chapters, with the conclusion presented first. In it, we meet Hiddleston’s Chuck Krantz, a man who, on the verge of turning forty, is facing death from a brain tumor. By revealing this devastating news at the very beginning of the film, King is able to create a beautiful and joyous exploration of one man’s life and his impact on those around him.

This marks the first collaboration between Hiddleston and Flanagan; however, fans of the filmmaker will recognize several familiar faces in the ensemble cast. Included are actors who have previously appeared in Flanagan’s other works such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, Hush, The Midnight Club, and Oculus. Joining Hiddleston as he navigates life are talents like Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Karan Gillan, Carl Lumbly, Annalise Basso, Rahul Kohli, Violet McGraw, and Heather Langenkamp, along with newcomers to Flanagan’s projects such as Mark Hamill, Mia Sara, Nick Offerman, Matthew Lillard, and David Dastmalchian.

‘The Life of Chuck’s Critical Praise

Despite not earning as much at the box office as it deserved during its theatrical release, The Life of Chuck received significant acclaim from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts an 80% critics’ approval rating alongside an impressive 88% audience score. In his review, Collider’s Jason Gorber, who awarded the movie nine out of ten stars, stated:

“Flanagan’s latest is simply a stunner. His finest film is a deeply heartfelt, glorious thing. Dancing between the ruminative and the revelatory, it never succumbs to being maudlin or cloying. The Life of Chuck is a modern fable told with the deftness of a fairy tale, with the sheer exuberance of a musical while exuding the same sense of wonder one gets staring up at the heavens. A life well-lived, indeed.”
