In the last five decades of the entertainment industry, constants have included popcorn and Stephen King. This year has been particularly filled with adaptations of the renowned author’s work, inspiring a new generation of audiences to explore older films and shows that his stories have influenced. Among the lesser-known King adaptations is the thriller miniseries 11.22.63, which premiered in 2016 to positive reviews, developed a solid cult following over the years, and is now experiencing a surge in viewership on iTunes.
According to FlixPatrol, 11.22.63 entered the domestic iTunes charts on October 20, when the leaderboard was led by the perennial favorite South Park. Starring James Franco and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, 11.22.63 follows a time traveler who attempts to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy. On the domestic streaming charts, 11.22.63 surpassed Snowpiercer, as well as the animated series Tron: Uprising, which has gained traction following the theatrical release of the franchise’s latest installment, Tron: Ares.
Also featuring Sarah Gadon, Chris Cooper, and George MacKay, 11.22.63 received mostly positive reviews. It currently holds a “certified fresh” 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus states, “Though the execution feels almost as dated as the period it represents, 11.22.63 gradually reveals a compelling, well-performed series of events.” Collider’s review at the time described it as “unique and highly satisfying“, noting that the show’s “aesthetics are tantalizing, the acting compelling, and the twists and supernatural elements are genuinely shocking.”
Fans of Stephen King Have Several Major Projects to Anticipate
The year 2025 has been filled with King adaptations, starting with The Life of Chuck, which received highly positive reviews but did not perform well at the box office. Following that was Osgood Perkins‘ The Monkey, which performed very well commercially. Most recently, Francis Lawrence‘s The Long Walk garnered some of the best reviews for a King adaptation in years. Fans can look forward to Edgar Wright‘s The Running Man and It: Welcome to Derry.
