Steven Tyler Doesn’t Want to Tour with Aerosmith, Says Joe Perry

The renowned Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry recently revealed that frontman Steven Tyler “doesn’t want to tour” with the legendary band again after their brief and troubled farewell tour in 2023. This announcement comes following the band’s attempt to embark on their Peace Out farewell tour, which kicked off in September 2023 but had to be postponed after just three performances due to Tyler suffering an injury to his larynx. Ultimately, Aerosmith made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the tour and declared their retirement from touring altogether in August 2024, as Tyler’s injury was deemed too significant to overcome.

Despite Tyler’s recent triumphant appearance at Ozzy Osbourne’s Back to the Beginning farewell concert last month, sparking speculation about a potential Aerosmith return, Perry has indicated that a full tour is not currently on the horizon.

Joe Perry Shares Insights on Steven Tyler’s Touring Limitations

Perry elaborated on the situation, stating, “There’s been talk about doing a documentary, that might be part of it. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Steven, and he just doesn’t want to tour, and he can’t tour. It’s tough,” Perry expressed in an interview with WBUR. “I’m not sure I would want to go out and book another 40-city tour. The journey to the top is grueling, and maintaining that status takes a toll on you, especially when it comes to an Aerosmith tour.”

What about the possibility of another Las Vegas residency, similar to the Deuces Are Wild shows they staged in 2019 and 2022? Perry remarked, “I’ll never say never, but I wouldn’t bet on it — no pun intended. You really have to want to be out there, and we’re all at that point where we ask ourselves: How do you want to live? How do you want to spend the time you have left?”

Prospects for a Final Aerosmith Performance Remain Open

While a full tour may seem unlikely, Perry hasn’t completely dismissed the idea of a final performance with his iconic band. “I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left,” he confidently stated.

This sentiment echoes Perry’s previous comments during a conversation with radio host Eddie Trunk in June. “We’re talking about it. I mean, aside from anything currently on the calendar, we’re all alive and well, so we’ll just have to see,” Perry shared on SiriusXM‘s Trunk Nation. “I know there’s got to be at least one more Aerosmith gig, and I’m not looking forward to the challenge of putting the set list together for that show.”

When asked if Tyler could manage one last Aerosmith performance, Perry speculated, “I think he would. It’s just about making it happen, you know? I mean, we’re up there, man. And it’s a lot.”

Joe Perry Prepares for Exciting 2025 Solo Tour

In the meantime, Perry is gearing up for a brief North American tour with the Joe Perry Project, which kicks off on Wednesday in Tampa, Florida. He will be joined by fellow Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and touring keyboardist/backing vocalist Buck Johnson, alongside Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo and Black CrowesChris Robinson on lead vocals.

STP drummer Eric Kretz was initially slated to perform with the band, but he had to withdraw due to a family emergency. Instead, longtime Perry collaborator and current drummer for Cher, Jason Sutter, will take his place behind the kit.

“The vibe of the project is relaxed. I like to think of it as a garage band, but we’re performing on stage in front of an audience,” Perry reflected. “These gigs with this lineup feel like a dream – it’s definitely helping to sell out venues.”

Ranking Aerosmith Albums from Worst to Best

Any comprehensive ranking of Aerosmith albums must consider the two distinct eras: their raw and edgy work from the ’70s compared to their polished and commercially successful comeback in the ’80s. But which era produced the superior music?
