Still Living in the Past: Jethro Tull’s New Six-Disc Set

Jethro Tull is set to unveil an exciting enhanced edition of the iconic 1972 compilation album, Living in the Past. This new release promises to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

The anticipated six-disc collection, titled Still Living in the Past, is scheduled to hit the shelves on July 11. It features a treasure trove of remixes, unreleased demos, and electrifying live tracks that showcase the band’s evolution over the years.

In a continuation of his work on previous Jethro Tull reissues, renowned producer Steven Wilson has meticulously remixed the original album along with previously unreleased concert recordings. The comprehensive set comprises five music CDs and a Blu-ray disc that includes high-quality audio and four promotional clips from the years 1970 and 1971, making it a must-have for any serious collector.

“More than five decades since its initial release, this collection—featuring the exceptional remixes by Steven Wilson and immersive surround sound upgrades—serves as a remarkable addition to the illustrious Jethro Tull album series,” stated Ian Anderson, the band’s frontman, in a press release introducing the set. “This compilation was originally created to update the Jethro Tull narrative for both U.S. and European audiences who may not have experienced the extensive catalog that had already delighted fans in the UK.”

“I vividly recall the sessions for many of these tracks, and some I can still perform from memory without any hesitation. This collection, characterized by its eclecticism, reflects my diverse musical influences and my efforts to expand my songwriting and arranging capabilities beyond the band’s rock and blues roots. My mandolin and acoustic guitar contributions are among my personal favorites.”

Upon its original debut in 1972, Living in the Past was crafted as a gateway for new fans who were introduced to the band following the success of Thick as a Brick, which soared to No. 1 earlier that same year.

Achieving an impressive No. 3 spot on the U.S. charts, the original LP featured a mix of outtakes, album tracks, and singles dating back to 1968. This newly released version presents a collection of remixed renditions of those classic tracks along with alternative recordings of beloved Jethro Tull songs from that era, enriching the listening experience.

Moreover, Still Living in the Past includes an exclusive recording of a Carnegie Hall concert from November 4, 1970, which has never been made available to the public until now.
