Ten years ago, Denis Villeneuve directed a sci-fi masterpiece that has stood the test of time, remaining among the most impressive sci-fi titles of this century. Titled Arrival, the film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2016, and was released theatrically in the US on November 11, that same year, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. Eric Heisserer wrote the screenplay as an adaptation of Ted Chiang’s 1998 novella, “Story of Your Life,” while Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Aaron Ryder, and David Linde served as producers.
For some time now, fans in the US have been fortunate enough to stream Arrival for free, albeit with ads, thanks to Tubi. However, time is running out for the movie’s stay on the streamer, as it has now been listed among the “Leaving Soon” titles with no specific date stated. As a pretty essential title for any sci-fi fan, Arrival “delivers a must-see experience,” blending visually spectacular cinematography with wild science fiction from the perspective of a very human story.
Arrival was both a critical and commercial success upon its release. It currently holds an approval rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising lead star Amy Adams‘ performance, Villeneuve’s direction, and the film’s intriguing plot. Commercially, the sci-fi gem grossed $100.5 million in North America and $102.8 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $203.4 million, against a production budget of $47 million. Later on January 31, 2017, Arrival was released on Digital HD, and the following month, on February 14, it arrived on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.
What Is ‘Arrival’ About?
Arrival sees Adams as Linguistics professor Louise Banks, who leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. Louise and physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) are recruited by the US military to translate the language of a pair of alien Heptapods from the ship, who experience time non-linearly. Upon learning their language, Louise also gains this ability. Also starring in Arrival were Forest Whitaker as Colonel Weber; Michael Stuhlbarg as Agent Halpern; Mark O'Brien as Captain Marks; and Tzi Ma as General Shang, among others.
Watch Arrival on Tubi now before it exits soon. Stay tuned to Collider for future streaming news.
