Styx Concerns Over Label’s Reaction to New Album Concept

The highly anticipated title of Styx’s upcoming album has been officially announced, alongside exciting details regarding its release timeline. This announcement comes on the heels of the band’s recent participation in a question-and-answer session during this year’s Rock Legends Cruise, where they eagerly discussed the forthcoming music that fans can expect.

In his remarks, Tommy Shaw expressed his excitement, revealing that the band has successfully completed the last song for the album. He emphasized, “The hard part is done, and we are f thrilled! … While I would describe it as completely new, it still remains true to the essence of what Styx fans have come to love and expect.”

However, when Shaw, an enthusiastic birdwatcher, called one of their label executives to share the concept behind their yet-to-be-titled album, he revealed that it centers around a bird—a Starling, to be precise. He initially felt apprehensive about how this unique theme would be received by the team.

To his surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive. “He says, ‘Oh, we’re birders!’” Shaw recalled with a smile. “It felt a bit risky to declare that this album would focus on a bird, but the enthusiasm was infectious. Sometimes in life, circumstances align perfectly, and this was one of those fortunate moments for us.”

During the Q&A, Shaw also unveiled the album’s official title: Circling From Above. He previously indicated that Styx had not set out to create a new album intentionally; rather, it was a creative process that evolved organically.

“We just stumbled upon a new way of doing things,” he explained to UCR last December. “When it comes to writing, you don’t have to complete everything in one go. My collaborator, Will [Evankovich], and I have been crafting music together for about 10 to 15 years. When we hit upon a song we love, Will—who is more organized than I am—saves it on a hard drive. Over the years, we’ve accumulated a wealth of material.”

Exciting Release Timeline for ‘Circling From Above’

While Styx did not specify an exact release date for Circling From Above during their engaging Q&A session, they did indicate that fans can expect the album to drop at the end of May. This forthcoming release is sure to generate significant anticipation among fans of the band.
