?Sunny Balwani is an extraordinary person,? stated Jeff Coopersmith, Balwani?s attorney, in an interview with ABC News. ?He was born in Pakistan to a Hindu family, and eventually, the family had to relocate to India due to the challenges of being a Hindu in predominantly Muslim Pakistan. Upon arriving in the United States, he expressed his gratitude by literally kissing the ground and pursued his education at the University of Texas, where he earned a degree in computer science. The Path to Theranos: Sunny Balwani’s Tech Career

Before joining forces with Holmes to launch Theranos ? a company that claimed its devices could conduct standard blood tests using just a few drops of blood from a finger prick, as noted by The Guardian ? Balwani had already carved out a niche for himself in the tech industry. He served as a sales manager for Microsoft in Northern California, where he honed his skills and expanded his network, according to The New York Times. During the dot-com boom, he joined a startup named CommercBid.com, which was designed to create competitive platforms that incentivized suppliers to reduce prices.

CommerceBid was eventually acquired by Commerce One for an impressive $225 million. Following the burst of the dot-com bubble, Balwani reportedly walked away with around $40 million. After this lucrative experience, he returned to academia and later became the Chief Operating Officer at Theranos, where he played a pivotal role in the company’s controversial rise.

Legal Troubles: Sunny Balwani Faces Fraud Charges

In June 2018, both Holmes and Balwani were indicted on federal wire fraud charges related to a multi-million dollar scheme aimed at defrauding investors, as reported by CNN. Both individuals entered a plea of not guilty. In January 2022, a jury found Holmes guilty on four out of eleven charges, which included one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud associated with specific investors. She was acquitted on three charges related to defrauding patients and one conspiracy charge, while the jury could not reach a verdict on three additional charges.

Holmes’ sentencing was originally scheduled for September 2022; however, Balwani had yet to stand trial for his alleged involvement at that time. He has also been indicted on two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations against him.

Balwani?s legal team argued for his innocence, asserting that he did not profit from his time at Theranos. His attorney, Jeffrey Coopersmith, stated, ?In my 28 years of practicing law, both as a federal prosecutor and a defense attorney, I have never encountered a situation like this, where the government pursues criminal charges against an individual who did not gain any financial benefits and instead lost millions of his own dollars.” He emphasized that ?Mr. Balwani committed no crimes. He did not defraud the sophisticated investors at Theranos nor did he deceive consumers, but instead worked diligently to empower them with access to their health data.?

Allegations of Abuse: Elizabeth Holmes Accuses Sunny Balwani

During her testimony, Holmes revealed that she first met Balwani in the summer before she began attending Stanford at the age of 18, while he was nearly two decades her senior and married. Their relationship developed alongside the establishment of Theranos, leading Holmes to accuse Balwani of both sexual assault and controlling behavior throughout their time together, as detailed by the Washington Post. Balwani has vehemently denied these allegations.

In a February 2025 interview with PEOPLE, Holmes disclosed that she was raped at a college fraternity party and now receives cognitive and behavioral therapy for PTSD, supervised by a psychiatrist while incarcerated. Additionally, she offers support and counseling to fellow inmates who are survivors of sexual assault.
