Sunset Boulevard Box Set to Feature Rare Elvis Presley Gems

This summer, a remarkable Elvis Presley box set is being released to commemorate his 90th birthday. This eagerly anticipated collection will showcase an impressive total of 89 tracks, just one shy of his birthday milestone, all recorded during the final decade of his illustrious career. Fans of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll will be thrilled to explore these deep cuts, which reveal the evolution of his music and artistry.

The title Sunset Boulevard signifies a treasure trove of recordings from the early ’70s, a period when Elvis and the TCB Band rigorously rehearsed for electrifying live performances in Los Angeles. During this time, they also laid down numerous songs at the city’s renowned RCA Studio C, cementing their legacy in rock history.

Of the remarkable 89 tracks included in this upcoming release, over half have never been available in the U.S. before. This five-CD set, titled Sunset Boulevard, is set to hit the shelves on August 1. Fans can get a taste by listening to an alternate version of the 1972 smash hit “Burning Love,” which was Presley’s last entry into the Top 10.

Following his landmark 1968 comeback television special and subsequent releases from his Memphis recordings in 1969, including his iconic No. 1 hit “Suspicious Minds,” Elvis Presley began a series of regular performances in Las Vegas. This marked the beginning of a new wave of popularity that continued until his untimely death in 1977.

In both March 1972 and March 1975, Elvis dedicated a full week to recording material that would later emerge as singles and be featured on albums like 1973’s Separate Ways and 1975’s Today. These sessions produced some of his late-period classics, including “Burning Love” and “Always on My Mind,” which will be presented in both master and alternate takes on Sunset Boulevard. Additionally, between the two Los Angeles sessions, Presley also recorded at Stax Studios in Memphis, further enriching his discography.

The highly anticipated box set features a disc containing newly mixed master versions of all 17 songs from the two Los Angeles sessions of the ’70s, ensuring fans can experience these tracks in their finest form. A second CD is dedicated to showcasing 17 outtakes and alternate recordings from the pivotal sessions of 1972 and 1975, providing a deeper dive into the creative process behind these hits.

In a move similar to last year’s Memphis box set, which highlighted recordings from 1969, this collection has had all overdubs stripped away. As a result, listeners will enjoy only Elvis’s powerful vocals accompanied by the raw sound of the live band, allowing for an authentic listening experience.

The final three discs of Sunset Boulevard are dedicated to capturing rehearsals that Elvis and the band conducted in Los Angeles prior to concerts in 1970 and 1974. The rehearsal from July 24, 1970, spans an impressive one and a half CDs, featuring a variety of songs that have become staples in Presley’s repertoire, including “That’s All Right,” “Love Me Tender,” and “Don’t Cry Daddy.”

The concluding portion of the set comes from a rehearsal held on August 16, 1974. This disc includes newer additions to Elvis’s catalog, featuring tracks such as “Promised Land,” “If You Talk in Your Sleep,” and a fantastic cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's “Proud Mary,” showcasing his ability to reinterpret contemporary hits.
