Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League Unlimited #9!
The most thrilling hero that embodies both Superman and Batman has made a spectacular return, showcasing one of the most iconic outfits within the DC Comics universe. Following the tumultuous events of “We Are Yesterday“, the intricate timeline of DC has been shattered, altering the fate of its heroes and reintroducing a character that fans believed had vanished forever from the comic book landscape.
In Justice League Unlimited #9, penned by Mark Waid and illustrated by Dan Mora, the League grapples with an array of time-displaced heroes. Green Lantern is vigilantly monitoring the League’s visitors, documenting which heroes are being sent back to their rightful timelines. Among them, the hero who particularly irks him is Superbat, who wields his formidable Lantern powers.
The League soon finds itself facing off against the formidable duo of the Time Trapper and the World Forger. These powerful beings arrive with the intent to dissect Grodd in order to extract the potent Omega energy that resides within him. The assembled heroes are resolute in their decision to protect Grodd from being harmed, launching an attack against the duo. However, the Time Trapper erects an imposing protective barrier made of tachyons, confidently proclaiming that no hero, not even the formidable Superbat, possesses the strength to break through it.
The Return of Superman and Batman’s Superbat Form to the DC Canon
Experience the Ultimate Heroic Fusion Like Never Before
For those who might not be aware of Superbat, this unique character first emerged in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest during the initial storyline titled “The Devil Nezha“. In this narrative, the nefarious Nezha manipulates Green Lantern, and to gain the upper hand, Batman and Superman channel their combined willpower to redirect Hal Jordan’s ring onto themselves, resulting in a fusion that creates a being possessing the strengths of all three heroes.
Sadly, Superbat’s role in this issue was limited to a brief but memorable cameo. While several other heroes like Batman Beyond and Jonah Hex remain trapped in the current-day DC Universe, Superbat appears to have successfully returned to his designated time and space. However, the excitement of witnessing this remarkable combination of Superman and Batman once more is undeniably thrilling for fans.

Years Later, This Heroic Fusion Continues to Captivate Fans
While Superbat’s appearance may have been a singular event, the concept itself is incredibly intriguing. It’s a delightful surprise to witness its return, even if just for a fleeting moment. Perhaps Mark Waid is nostalgic for the character and is exploring the potential for future stories involving Superbat, testing the waters for fan interest. Nonetheless, whether it serves as a nostalgic cameo or a harbinger of more adventures, it’s always exhilarating to see Batman and Superman united in their greatest amalgamated form.
