After the success of James Gunn’s Superman, the next movie on the DC Universe slate is Supergirl — so when can we expect the first Supergirl movie trailer to release? Milly Alcock made her DCU debut as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, at the very end of Superman, when it’s revealed Krypto is actually her dog and Clark (David Corenswet) was only watching him for her.
Shortly after the release of Superman, DC Studios unveiled the first poster for the Supergirl movie, but there hasn’t been much in the way of official promotion since then. Now, with winter movie season ramping up and 2025 drawing to a close, it’s time for studios to start marketing their big releases of 2026.
Already, there’s been a great deal of discussion about when Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will debut trailers for the major MCU movies set to release next year — Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. It’s been confirmed the Avengers: Doomsday trailer will be tied to Avatar: Fire and Ash when the latter hits theaters next month, but what about Supergirl?
When Could The Supergirl Movie Trailer Be Released?
The first Supergirl movie trailer could potentially be released as soon as next month. Like Marvel and Sony, DC Studios and Warner Bros. may want to capitalize on the busy holiday period to promote a significant 2026 release. WB doesn’t have any major blockbusters of their own hitting theaters, but that’s not necessarily a determining factor.
If we look back on when Superman began its marketing campaign, the very first teaser trailer was released on Dec. 18, 2024. If DC Studios plans to follow a similar promotional schedule, then the Supergirl trailer could be released in mid-December, screening in theaters with movies like Avatar: Fire and Ash.
However, it’s possible DC Studios may wait until early next year to debut the first Supergirl trailer for two key reasons. First, Superman launched the new DC Universe, so the studio would have wanted to put an exceptionally large marketing push behind it. They needed to sell Gunn’s movie for the new franchise to succeed, which may explain why the trailer was released when it was.
The other reason is that the Supergirl movie story may skew a little older than Superman. The film is based on the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely. In this particular story, Supergirl is a more jaded, world-weary version of the character who sets off on a mission of revenge.
While the movie will surely appeal to a wide range of audiences, it is undoubtedly a darker, more mature story than that told in Superman. As such, the marketing may be different. Depending on how mature the story is, DC may not want to play the trailer in front of Zootopia 2 or other younger-skewing films.
The Supergirl film’s release date is less than nine months away, meaning the promotional push is likely to begin in the coming months, if not weeks. Whether that means the Supergirl trailer debuts next month remains to be seen, but it would certainly be a smart move. If not, the Supergirl trailer could release in early 2026, perhaps timed to the Super Bowl on Feb. 8, 2026. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
