As a symbol of truth, justice, and the embodiment of the human spirit, he finds himself in a contemporary world that increasingly views these ideals as antiquated.
THOUGHT-PROVOKING REVIEW OF SUPERMAN: The character of Superman has historically been challenging to adapt for the big screen, making this new iteration particularly thrilling as it aims to establish an entirely fresh DC Universe. With James Gunn directing, it was evident that a deep appreciation for the source material would be present. However, questions lingered regarding whether Gunn’s unique style would align with the moral integrity of a character as iconic as the last son of Krypton. I’m pleased to report that Gunn not only excels in portraying Superman, but also successfully lays the foundation for a vibrant new DCU.
Superman embarks on a journey where he must navigate the complex political landscape that arises from his heroic actions. This modern take on the character retains the essence of Superman while anchoring him in a relatable world. The setting feels richly developed, populated by a diverse array of superheroes like Green Lantern, Hawk Girl, and Mr. Terrific, who are all engaged in the ongoing battle against evil in Metropolis. However, the notorious villain Lex Luthor concocts a devious scheme to turn public sentiment against the Man of Steel. While some plot twists may be familiar to seasoned comic book enthusiasts, the emotional journey and suspense are nothing short of exhilarating. I initially feared that Gunn might lean too heavily into humor, yet it seamlessly integrates with the narrative without undermining the unfolding drama.
The performance of David Corenswet as Superman is a refreshing homage to the character, evoking memories of Christopher Reeve without mimicking him. Corenswet embodies that iconic charisma associated with Superman, and while the narrative leans more towards his superhero persona than Clark Kent, it strikes a balance that feels appropriate for a blockbuster. The Clark Kent moments resonate powerfully, just as the action sequences featuring Superman do. His on-screen chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan is palpable, and it’s commendable to see Lois Lane portrayed as a determined journalist who stands her ground. Brosnahan delivers a stunning performance, and if anything, I found myself wishing for even more scenes featuring her character.
Nicholas Hoult excels as a cunning Lex Luthor, capturing the essence of the mad genius while avoiding the cartoonish villainy that has sometimes plagued previous portrayals. His disdain for Kryptonians feels genuine, adding depth to his character. Yet, the malevolence surrounding Lex cannot be understated; the delight on his followers’ faces as they execute their heinous plans serves as a stark reminder that blind loyalty can lead to moral depravity.
One of the standout features of Superman is its masterful handling of a large ensemble cast. Every character feels essential to the storyline, ensuring that no moment is wasted. Performances by Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner are particularly noteworthy, with each actor bringing vibrancy to their roles. Even Eve Tessmacher, who initially seemed like a mere nod to nostalgia, proves to be a significant contributor to the plot.
I was thoroughly captivated by Superman, often awestruck by the visual effects on display. The CGI, particularly the representation of Krypto, stands out as one of the most remarkable digital achievements in recent cinema, blurring the line between reality and animation. The practical effects are equally commendable, with Anthony Carrigan’s portrayal of Metamorpho showcasing technical brilliance. The flying sequences felt exhilarating, especially in IMAX, with audience reactions elevating the experience to new heights. It was a refreshing reminder of the excitement that can only be felt in a theater setting.
However, I found myself somewhat critical of the extensive destruction depicted in the city. This aspect has been contentious in past adaptations, and I still hold reservations about it in Gunn’s iteration. The narrative justification of evacuating the city feels somewhat insufficient, and the level of chaos can come across as excessive. Additionally, there were moments where Superman appeared less powerful than expected, often finding himself at a disadvantage during fights. While this was likely a response to criticisms about his overwhelming strength in previous films, it may have been slightly overemphasized in this context.
There are certainly viewers who have already formed their opinions about Superman before even entering the cinema, a common phenomenon for major releases, especially within the comic book genre, which has faced its fair share of backlash in recent years. However, as a lifelong fan of comic books who has struggled to connect with past adaptations, this rendition finally provided me with a Superman that feels relatable and grounded. Despite his alien origins, he is portrayed with a humanity that resonates deeply, reminiscent of my favorite storyline, All-Star Superman. This film has left me optimistic for the future of the DCU. While not every aspect is flawless, it serves as an impressive beginning for what lies ahead.
