Superman Surpasses Zack Snyder’s 65% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Director James Gunn‘s latest film, Superman, made an impressive debut last weekend, successfully capturing the attention of audiences worldwide. While the film’s international performance fell slightly short of expectations, it excelled in domestic theaters, outperforming many previous superhero releases. In its first three days, Superman has generated over $200 million globally, surpassing the box office totals of several past superhero films. Notably, it has already outpaced the $190 million worldwide earnings of Superman II and the $219 million lifetime gross of Ryan Reynolds‘s Green Lantern, which had received a fair share of ridicule. Furthermore, Superman has eclipsed one of director Zack Snyder‘s most notable works, which initially underperformed at the box office upon its release in 2009.

Currently, Superman is approaching its reported budget of $225 million with a global total of $220 million. Analysts predict that the film could ultimately gross around $600 million worldwide, a respectable figure considering the historically fluctuating box office appeal of the Superman franchise. This latest installment is intended to revitalize a new shared universe of films and shows, led by Gunn and his producing partner, Peter Safran. Their ambitious franchise appears to be off to a promising start, particularly in terms of both critical acclaim and fan enthusiasm.

In addition to its financial success, Superman boasts a stronger opening weekend performance domestically than Snyder’s Man of Steel, a film that, while tonally different, launched the now-defunct DC Extended Universe back in 2013. Although Superman has a significant journey ahead to surpass Man of Steel at the box office, it has already outperformed Snyder’s Watchmen, which earned a lifetime global total of $186 million. Watchmen, released after the breakout success of 300, was met with high anticipation the year following The Dark Knight, which transformed the superhero film landscape. However, Watchmen struggled at the box office and received mixed reviews, as critics pointed out that its fidelity to the source material was viewed more as a flaw than a strength.

The Enthusiastic Reception of ‘Superman’ from Critics and Audiences

Currently, Watchmen holds a 65% rating on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, while Superman has achieved a significantly higher score of 83%. The film’s audience score is even more impressive, sitting at an outstanding 93%. Featuring a talented cast that includes David Corenswet as the titular hero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as the villainous Lex Luthor, Superman has been lauded by Collider’s Ross Bonaime for being “one of the most optimistic, playful, ludicrous, and downright fun Superman films in decades, possibly ever.” Be sure to catch this exciting film in theaters, and keep an eye on Collider for further updates.
