This upcoming project promises to deliver an entirely different flavor of suspense, as it delves into the realm of the supernatural. Under the direction of Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, known for his unique storytelling techniques, audiences can expect a fresh and thrilling cinematic experience.
In 2020, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia made a remarkable debut as a feature film director with the critically acclaimed thriller The Platform, which was distributed via the popular Netflix streaming service. The essence of my review highlights my admiration for the film, which left me eagerly anticipating Gaztelu-Urrutia’s next project. Prior to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, he was in the process of developing a film titled Rich Flu, but it has since been revealed that his next project is a sequel titled The Platform 2. According to Deadline, the original The Platform achieved an impressive 56 million views within its first month of release, securing a spot among the top ten most-watched films on Netflix at that time. Notably, The Platform 2 dominated the charts as the most-watched film on the platform during its initial two weeks and maintained a presence in the top ten for an impressive five weeks.
While Gaztelu-Urrutia co-wrote both films in the Platform series with writers David Desola and Pedro Rivero, for Banquet, he is collaborating with screenwriter Sam Steiner, known for his work on Fingernails. As reported by Deadline, Meghann Fahy will portray the character Jenny Cochrane, a woman whose seemingly perfect life is upended by the unexpected return of her estranged son. This shocking event triggers a long-buried and terrifying secret that lies within her family’s bloodline, promising to add layers of depth and complexity to the narrative.
The film is being produced by Lewis Taylor for Film Transmission, alongside James Harris for Tea Shop Productions. Additionally, XYZ Films is financing the project and plans to kick off international sales at the upcoming Cannes market this month. CAA Media Finance is co-representing the U.S. distribution rights. Notably, David Yates, the renowned director of the Harry Potter franchise, is serving as an executive producer through his company Wychwood Media. Moreover, Florian Zeller and Federica Sainte-Rose are also on board as executive producers for Blue Morning Pictures. Banquet is anticipated to commence production in October in the U.K., marking another significant step in its development.
