Zak Starkey — who has experienced a whirlwind week — has recently unveiled an exciting, unreleased all-star rendition of T. Rex’s “Children of the Revolution.” This track was recorded for a charity album that has not yet been officially announced but is generating significant buzz.
You can listen to this remarkable cover below, which features legendary artists such as Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Elton John, and Starkey’s father, the iconic Ringo Starr.
The talented drummer of The Who initially shared the song on social media back in February, accompanied by a poignant video that depicts the story of a young cancer patient. In light of Starkey’s recent firing and subsequent rehiring from The Who, the song has gained more traction online. This powerful cover aims to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, highlighting its importance in supporting young cancer patients.

“Ringo/Elton/Axl/Duff/Slash. Let’s rally together amazing people – let’s make this record available and help [help] these teenagers who, as musicians, we depend on so much,” Starkey expressed on Instagram. “If we delay too long, some of these brave young individuals may not have enough time to hear it.”
He elaborated on the track, stating, “This is just the first half; things are about to get wild!!! All proceeds generated by this record will go towards teenage cancer — if it gets released, which is entirely dependent on the remarkable participants giving us their approval.”

Starkey disclosed the cover’s existence in 2024, revealing that it originated back in 2017 when Guns N’ Roses and The Who performed at Rock in Rio. “My dad played drums in L.A. (while I handled the bass) and then in Rio, Duff recorded the bass,” he recounted.
“A few weeks after the tour, we recorded the guitars in NYC with Slash — we sent the track with Sshh [Starkey’s wife, musician Sshh Liguz] providing guide vocals to Elton, who played an incredible piano part. Sshh then spent time with Axl, who expressed his desire to lend his vocals – and wow! Axl absolutely nailed it with his incredible vocals – I believe he is currently mixing the track (fingers crossed).”
Starkey also mentioned that the album features contributions from “more than one Beatle, a Smith, a Pretender, an Ashcroft, an Iggy, and many others,” expressing his hope to see it released “without greedy major labels wanting 75% (I won’t name names, but this is for sick children).”
