Targaryen Family Tree Explained in A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

WARNING! This article contains major spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 3 & George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight.

HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses on another era of House Targaryen’s family tree, featuring complex relationships and recurring names from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. While the story primarily follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire “Egg,” their adventures are intricately linked to those of the Targaryens. After episode 3, the connections become evident.

The timeline of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set between HBO’s previous series, occurring about 80 years after House of the Dragon and approximately 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Consequently, House Targaryen’s members find themselves in a precarious situation as their last dragons have recently perished following the Dance of the Dragons, with the loss of the Iron Throne looming ahead.

Despite this, many Targaryens remain during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, including one who plays a significant role in Game of Thrones. Given the intricate Targaryen family tree, this article provides a comprehensive breakdown of their names, titles, and relationships during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The reigning monarch on the Iron Throne during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is King Daeron II Targaryen. Daeron “the Good” Targaryen is the twelfth Targaryen King of Westeros, whose reign is best known for peacefully integrating Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms. Daeron II is the great-grandson of Queen Rhaenyra from House of the Dragon.

Daeron is the son of the late King Aegon IV Targaryen and his sister-wife Naera Targaryen. His full-blooded sister is Princess Daenerys, while his half-siblings include Brynden Rivers, Daemon Blackfyre, and Aegor Rivers. King Daeron II has four sons: Baelor, Aerys, Rhaegel, and Maekar, along with several grandchildren, including Maekar’s six children, Baelor’s two kids, and Rhaegel’s three children.

Martin’s books, Baelor possesses his mother Myriah Martell’s dark hair instead of the iconic silver hair typical to Targaryens and is recognized for his honor and skills as a warrior.

Baelor is Maekar’s elder brother and uncle to Aerion, Daeron, Aemon, and Aegon from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Portrayed by actor Bertie Carvel in the prequel to Game of Thrones, Baelor is married to Lady Jena Dondarrion and has two sons named Valarr and Matarys Targaryen.
