The absence of Kelly Severide was observed when Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) was placed as an acting lieutenant for Rescue Squad 3. CFD floater and former 51 secretary Kylie (Katelynn Shennett) exchanges greetings with Cruz at the firehouse before being summoned by Stella at the Girls on Fire training session. She wanted Kylie to help her out with the recruitment of potential candidates. When Kylie gets there, she learns about the whereabouts of Severide.
Stella reveals to Kylie that Severide is visiting Isaiah in Cleveland. Therefore, she wanted to spend her free time working for Girls on Fire, rather than wasting her time doomscrolling social media. Moreover, Chief Dom Pascal also formally addressed Severide’s absence during a meeting. Apart from disclosing Severide’s cause of absence, Pascal also revealed that even Sal Vasquez is missing in action as he’s engrossed in a CFD assignment, which has taken him away temporarily.
In an interview with TV Insider, Joe Minoso spoke about stepping into a leadership role as the acting lieutenant of Squad 3 in an episode marked by Severide’s absence. He added, “The fact that he’s in a leadership role on this call, he’s going to feel a deeper level of responsibility toward his men and everyone in the company because he has to make some of the tough calls. We haven’t really [got] to see that aspect in Cruz’s sort of newfound leadership position yet.”
