The competition is intensifying in the second round of the US Open.
Following Jelena “Alona” Ostapenko’s 5-7, 1-6 defeat against American Taylor Townsend on Aug. 27, the Latvian tennis player reportedly had some strong words for her opponent.
During their post-match handshake, the former French Open champion seemed to confront Townsend for not apologizing earlier in the match when she hit a net cord, where the ball touches the top of the net but stays in play. (While many players typically raise a hand to apologize for a successful net cord, there is no official rule requiring a player to express regret.)
After the interaction—which involved several verbal exchanges and was overshadowed by crowd boos—Townsend recounted the moment during her on-court interview.
“It’s competition; people get upset when they lose and some people say hurtful things,” she explained regarding Ostapenko. “She told me I have no class, I have no education and to see what happens when we get outside the U.S.”
