Terrence Howard reveals reasons for his Iron Man 2 firing

Starting with Iron Man 2, Don Cheadle has played James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine in many Marvel projects, but in a different world, Terrence Howard would still be in the role.

Terrence Howard on Why He Was Dropped from Iron Man 2

Howard played the character in Iron Man, but by the time the sequel rolled around, he was pushed out and recast with Cheadle. At the time, Howard said it came down to a salary dispute, with the actor refusing to accept a drastic pay cut. However, while speaking recently on the PBD Podcast, Howard offered up a different possibility, one which involves a confrontation with Hollywood producer Joel Silver.

Several months before the release of Iron Man, Howard was starring alongside Jodie Foster in The Brave One, a vigilante action-thriller. While promoting the film at the Venice Film Festival, Howard expressed frustration that his name wasn’t given the same credit treatment as Foster.

Joel Silver came and had a conversation with me, and he’s like, ‘The reason your name isn’t above the titles is because you’re not the star of this thing — it’s Jodie. And if you get nominated for an Oscar, it’s going to be for Supporting Actor, not Best Actor,’” Howard said. “And I was like, ‘Thank you for telling me that, now I understand. But, you have to remember that I’m a man just like you, and if you ever talk to me in that way again, I’m going to knock your teeth out of your mouth.’

Silver happened to produce The Brave One alongside Susan Downey, the wife of Robert Downey Jr. “Eight months later, I lose Iron Man,” Howard said. “And I’m sure that all of those things played their part.

Denzel Washington Helped Him

Later in the interview, Howard said his “aggression” and “need to be a man” didn’t do his career any favours. However, he had a conversation with Denzel Washington that changed his perspective. “He told me, ‘Look at your hands; your fists are all balled up,’” Howard said. “‘All of these producers are trying to open your hand so they can put money in it, but you won’t do it; you keep your hands all tight. And you’re blowing it.’
