James Wan is officially returning to the action genre, having joined the upcoming reimagining of the Korean film The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount Pictures.
What do we know about The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil remake?
Wan, renowned for directing films such as Saw, The Conjuring, and Furious 7, will direct and produce this project, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok and one of the stars of the original film, is attached to the project and is set to reprise his role in the reimagining.
Shay Hatten (John Wick, Rebel Moon) is tasked with writing the screenplay for the movie, based on a draft by Brian Helgeland. Currently, there is no additional casting information available, and it remains unclear how different this film will be from the original.
Originally released in 2019, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil follows the story of a gangster and a cop who must collaborate to catch a serial killer while confronting obstacles posed by each other’s enemies. The film was written and directed by Lee Won-tae, featuring Ma Dong-seok as the gangster, Kim Mu-yeol as the police officer, and Kim Sung-kyu as the serial killer.
The original movie received critical acclaim and holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The performances of the cast and Lee himself were particularly praised.
For Wan, this marks his latest project since 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Although he has held several producer roles since then as a founder of Atomic Monster, he has been away from directing for three years.
