Tommy Lee Jones may not be a common name associated with television, but he is making a return as part of the cast for season 2 of FX’s The Lowdown. This marks his first television series in decades.
The Lowdown Season 2
Details about Tommy Lee Jones’ role remain undisclosed, but he is the second new cast member announced for this season. Betty Gilpin (GLOW) joined the show last week, portraying a character named Ginger.
Created by Sterlin Harjo, The Lowdown follows the “gritty exploits of citizen journalist Lee Raybon (Hawke), a self-proclaimed Tulsa ‘truthstorian’ whose obsession with the truth is always getting him into trouble. While Lee’s no idealist, he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk.” Production for the second season will take place in Tulsa, OK, this spring.
Tommy Lee Jones on TV
Tommy Lee Jones last appeared on television in The Sunset Limited, a made-for-TV movie that aired on HBO in 2011. He starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and also directed the film. Previously, he directed and starred in The Good Old Boy, but his most recognized television project is Lonesome Dove, a Western mini-series that also featured Robert Duvall. For his performance in the mini-series, Jones received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special.
Additionally, he appeared in episodes of Charlie’s Angels, Baretta, Barnaby Jones, and played Dr. Mark Toland in One Life to Live, one of his early significant roles.
What Did We Think of The Lowdown?
Our own Alex Maidy appreciated the first season, stating it was “probably the closest we will come to a worthy successor to The Big Lebowski.“ He noted that the series features “A great cast of characters, led by Ethan Hawke in one of the best performances of his career, [and] is amplified by the unique Tulsa setting that transforms this from just another mystery limited series into a tale worthy of getting lost in.” You can read his full review right here.
