The Mule Meets His Match Amid Brother Day’s Tragic Plan

Editor’s note: The below recap contains spoilers for Foundation Season 3 Episode 3.

The philosophical themes, intricate timeline, and somewhat convoluted narrative of Foundation have sparked discussions about its initial pacing. However, Season 2 transformed the series by merging its predecessor’s strength—deep character exploration—with gripping plots that move at a breakneck speed. The adaptation of Isaac Asimov‘s monumental 10-book series on Apple TV+ has honed its identity, showcasing a narrative filled with clarity and ambition. The third episode of Season 3, aptly named “When a Book Finds You,” penned by Eric Carrasco and Greg Goetz, directed by Tim Southam, continues this upward trajectory and sets the stage for a thrilling ride in the remaining seven episodes.

Forming a Strategic Alliance: Key Developments in ‘Foundation’ Season 3 Episode 3

Following the shocking alliance revealed last week between Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton) and Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell), the opening scene of Episode 3 delves into the origins of their partnership. Set three years in the past, we see Dawn exploring a library in search of a rare, prohibited book on psychohistory. This ban was imposed by a previous Emperor, but as time passes, a future Emperor can modify such restrictions. The texts in question are the original handwritten manuscripts of Hari Seldon (Jared Harris). You may wonder why such invaluable documents are hidden away in a library on Trantor. Thanks to Dawn’s curiosity and impressive knowledge of psychohistory, the librarian arranges a meeting with a “colleague” who can provide deeper insights.

Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) meets Dawn in disguise—complete with a fake mustache and goatee—at a tea shop. The youngest Cleon is struck by the presence of Hari Seldon’s prodigy, as she is not expected to have survived after 321 years. He compliments her, stating, “You’ve done the impossible. You’ve made a Cleon feel like a very finite person.” Gaal quickly realizes that Dawn’s intrigue in psychohistory is more profound than a simple academic interest. With a hint of regret, he shares how mathematics has fascinated him since childhood. After being introduced to the Prime Radiant by Demerzel (Laura Birn), Cleon XXV discovered “the language of the angels.”

As these two seemingly opposing leaders negotiate their tentative alliance, Gaal wisely counters all of Dawn’s hesitations about collaborating with someone he perceives as an enemy. First, he showcases his intelligence, proving he is capable of making independent choices rather than conforming to the Empire’s propaganda. Moreover, this particular Cleon defies tradition—his aim is to assist humanity rather than prioritizing his Genetic Dynasty. Lastly, Gaal offers to be Day’s “escape hatch” if he finds himself in need of one.

The Encounter: The Mule Faces a Challenging Opponent in ‘Foundation’ Season 3 Episode 3

In the current timeline, Gaal presses Dawn to convene the Galactic Council and call for an emergency vote. Should the Empire issue an Enclosure order concerning Kalgan, they can limit the Mule’s (Pilou Asbæk) influence before he gains an upper hand. Dawn expresses concern that overstepping his authority may provoke a war with the Foundation, given that Kalgan is an independent territory beyond both of their dominions. However, Gaal assures him she can manage her situation; the onus is on Dawn to handle his. If he feels compelled to satisfy his curiosity by meeting the Mule directly, Gaal strongly advises against any face-to-face interactions. The last thing they require is an aspiring Emperor under the Mule’s control.

Meanwhile, on Kalgan, Captain Han Pritcher (Brandon P. Bell) and the newlywed Mallows, Toran (Cody Fern) and Bayta (Synnøve Karlsen), have successfully infiltrated the Mule’s extravagant party. It turns out that both the Mule and his entertainer, Magnifico Giganticus (Tómas Lemarquis), host an extravagant celebration filled with intergalactic club music, dazzling lights, and vibrant beverages. As Magnifico performs, the Mule lounges at a table with a blissfully unaware Skirlet (Isla Gie) and a couple of his soldiers. When Pritcher attempts to approach him, the Mule abruptly halts him by assaulting his mind. Pritcher gasps in agony, with blood vessels bursting in one eye, realizing too late the danger of his approach.

The Mallows, however, have their own agenda. They linger, eager for juicy gossip about Kalgan’s new overlord. Bayta skillfully engages Magnifico at the bar, while Toran tries to entice the Mule into sharing a drink. The Mule, interpreting Toran’s enthusiastic greeting as an insult, insists that the young man continue the barrage of mockery; he claims his culture enjoys playing “a game of insults.” After several attempts, Toran delivers a scathing tirade that leaves the Mule laughing. Unfortunately for Toran, the Mule boasts about his grand ambitions while slowly peeling the skin off Toran’s palm with an orange peeler. Nevertheless, the Mule’s admission of his intentions and display of sadism prove to be his downfall. Two of Toran’s small, floating drones illuminate the room with blinding light, providing just enough distraction for Toran to escape with Bayta and a treasonous Magnifico in tow. Despite his fury, the Mule dismisses their getaway with a chilling claim that his ultimate victory is “preordained.”

The Empire’s Initial Confrontation with the Mule Results in Disastrous Consequences in ‘Foundation’ Season 3 Episode 3

Back on Trantor, Brother Day (Lee Pace), consistently portrayed without a shirt, along with Song (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing), approaches Commander Mavon (Ibraheem Toure) in the soldiers’ barracks, asking for assistance in escaping the palace. Mavon declines, unwilling to jeopardize his family’s safety, despite Day’s offer to use the nanites in his cloned blood to heal Mavon’s sick daughter. As Day observes Demerzel from a distance, he shifts from a facade of calm to one of apprehension. After Demerzel leaves, Song reassures Day of her loyalty, even as the truth about Demerzel being a robot shakes her confidence.

Meanwhile, Brother Dusk (Terrance Mann) and Dawn engage in a holographic meeting with the Mule. Dawn takes the lead, ready to discuss the conditions required for the Mule to govern Kalgan. However, the Mule shows little regard for the Empire’s authority. He dismisses the Cleons’ privileged upbringing as a source of weakness, claiming they lack the necessary skills to wage and win a war. When a scream echoes in the background, the Mule nonchalantly refers to it as “housecleaning.”

At that moment, the Mule is preoccupied with eliminating those who failed to prevent the Mallows from escaping with Magnifico. He hangs up on the Empire just as he plunges a dagger into the side of his next victim. Reflecting on his own existential crisis, the Mule muses, “Do you ever feel like your life is not your own? Like it’s been overtaken by some holy spirit?” The unfortunate corpse can’t respond, prompting the Mule to articulate his own answer. Wiping the blood from his blade, he states, “It’s sort of a transcendent feeling you have to kill your way out of.”

A Heart-Wrenching Tragedy Disrupts Brother Day’s Escape Plans in ‘Foundation’ Season 3 Episode 3

Returning to Trantor, Song reveals her growing doubts about their escape plan. Her reluctance stems not from malice but from a newfound attachment to the protection offered by Demerzel. Meanwhile, Day yearns for more than just a glimpse of freedom; he desires normalcy, such as meeting Song’s family and experiencing her world. Their moment is interrupted by a summons from Dawn. As Day departs, Song discreetly gestures to Demerzel, touching her inner forearm with two fingers.

In the throne room, the Cleons gather, where Dawn utilizes his unfruitful conversation with the Mule—along with the looming four-month deadline before the Empire collapses—to advocate for Gaal’s proposed Enclosure. Day, possessing the authority to mobilize the Council, denies Dawn’s request, likely influenced by Dusk and Demerzel’s warnings that such a proposal would be perceived as a sign of the Empire’s weakness. In a moment of reflection, Day realizes he forgot to attend Dawn’s robing ceremony and offers an apology. He compensates by insisting that Dawn share the “best part” of the ceremony—a hidden flask. For the first time in ages, the three brothers share a genuine laugh, toasting to “strength, wisdom, and fortitude.”

Afterward, Day encounters Mavon in a hallway. Although the commander accepts Day’s proposal, the sincerity of his intentions remains questionable. Day then returns to his shared residence with Song, only to find Demerzel waiting in the dark on the balcony. Upon entering, Demerzel explains Song’s absence by revealing the meaning behind her subtle gesture: a religious blessing. This revelation surprises Day, as he was unaware that Song practiced a secret faith—the Inheritance, a nearly vanished sect that views robots as the saviors of humanity’s future. Fearing the worst, Day learns that rather than executing Song as the law dictates, Demerzel has erased her memories—leaving Day emotionally isolated once again. “I have few choices in my life,” Demerzel states, gently caressing his cheek. “For you, I did this.” Day would feel more desolate if not for the mercy shown to Song; yet he remains troubled, raging against Demerzel’s unsettling yet tender resolve.
