The Night Agent Season 4 Update Before Netflix Renewal

Netflix’s The Night Agent has returned with season 3, and with fans already eager for another season, the series’ fate hangs in the balance as a major update could be on the horizon.

The thriller series, based on Matthew Quirk’s novel, follows a low-level FBI agent, Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso), who works in the White House basement, managing an emergency line that never rings. When a desperate call comes from a tech CEO, Rose Larkin (played by Luciane Buchanan), after her aunt and uncle are murdered, Peter finds himself in a deadly conspiracy that could unravel the U.S. government.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for The Night Agent season 3, an update on whether the action-packed series would be returning for season 4 was addressed, including unpacking some of the chaos during the final episode of the season by creator and writer Shawn Ryan. A major component was missing from season 3, which was Buchanan’s character, Rose, as Peter had to focus on other things instead of ensuring Rose’s safety.

ScreenRant: “What is Peter feeling after saying goodbye to Rose?”

Shawn Ryan: “We’ve been in the writers’ room working on season 4, and so we spent a lot of time decoding season 3 and what to make of him. I think what we’ve determined is that he’s someone who seems very fixated on solving other people’s problems and saving other people because he has a hard time stopping and looking at his own problems and figuring out how to address them.

Not everyone works as a spy investigator like Peter does, but I think we can all appreciate trying to figure out our work-life balance. And he’s struggling to figure that out. Is there a way that he can be the kind of Night Agent he wants to be, be of service to people and to his country, but also have a life?

At the beginning of this season, he decided he can’t, at least with Rose, for her own safety. It was important to us, over the course of this season, to see how much he struggles with that, and to see that he’s perhaps not even completely sure it’s the right decision.

I think season 3 is about him figuring out, ‘Is there a way for me to do this job and be a regular, normal person? Or do I have to shove that all inside and not let it come out?’ And what does that do to a person if you become like that? These relationships with Jay, or with Isabel, or with Adam — while they’re not romantic — are really important for him growing as a person and figuring out what the ideal life for him as a Night Agent would be.

It’s early, and we’re not officially picked up yet, but we’re working and prepared if and when the call comes to jump in. So, our minds at the moment are already in season 4.”

However, not all is doom and gloom as it’s been hinted by Basso that Rose could return for season 4: “She might be back in season 4, in the same way that Chelsea was in 1 and came back in 3. Peter doesn’t forget about people, and she is very significant to him.”

Something to note is creator Ryan stated that The Night Agent season 4 hasn’t been picked up yet by Netflix, but the latest season delivered a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% and has been praised as the best installment yet. With the writers already looking towards season 4 after a highly successful season 3, it’ll be no surprise to anyone when The Night Agent returns for more chaos and action.

The Night Agent season 3 is available to stream on Netflix.
