Later on, Marvel revealed that Frank Castle made a deal with the demon Olivier, who protected Frank during the war but had Frank’s family killed to keep him on his leash. Daredevil: Born Again does the same, with Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle opposing corrupt officials who misuse the skull. At this point, the symbol is now known widely as shorthand for lethal vigilantism.

Within Marvel lore, the skull has also mutated under different circumstances. For instance, the Hand transforms the skull into a cult insignia, which the Punisher wears as the Fist of the Beast. In an alternate universe, Frank Castle becomes a literal incarnation of the symbol as Cosmic Ghost Rider, his literal flaming skull replacing the logo entirely.
