The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley has revealed whether season 8 found its newest romantic dynamic in Celina and Miles during the premiere. During The Rookie season 8 premiere, Lucy moves out of Celina’s apartment to live with Tim, leaving an open space she needed to fill. She ends up asking Miles if he wants to live with her.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender for The Rookie season 8 premiere, Hawley unpacked whether Celina and Miles living together could lead to romantic sparks flying between them. Ultimately, the showrunner said their friendship isn’t going to become anything more right now. He calls them an “odd couple” whose independence and companionship doesn’t need romance to work:
ScreenRant: Chenford finally moving in together made way for Miles and Celina to start cohabitating. That was a really fun and surprising storyline, too. How do you take the temperature of that dynamic right now? I see many people being like, “Besties forever,” and then other people being like, “I’m ready for romance!”
Alexi Hawley: I think besties for now. Again, it would need to feel organic and move us forward on a story front for it to be more than that. But given how long I took to make Chenford, I’m in it for the long game.
They’re really fun together in the same way, honestly, that Selena and Aaron were. There’s something really nice about the bestie relationship with these two people. It doesn’t have to be romantic. He’s such a specific character, with the Texas of it all, and she’s just doing her thing. They’re a bit of an odd couple, but I think it really is fun.
Celina and Miles became close characters in The Rookie following the latter’s induction as a rookie on the LAPD in season 7. The pair come from very different worlds: Celina became a police officer in hopes of solving what happened to her missing sister, while Miles came from a police department in Texas following a college football injury.
Yet despite their different dynamics, the pair grew close because of Celina being the newest major recruit, showing Miles the ropes while also learning from him. Their friendship blossomed over the course of the series, leading to her being comfortable with him moving in during The Rookie season 8 premiere. Romantic undertones, however, aren’t as strong as anticipated.
For one, Celina is in a long-distance relationship with Rodge, the singer of “Daddy Cop,” who is currently on tour. As for Miles, he’s single but doesn’t seem to be giving any thought to a romantic relationship right now. Based on Hawley’s statement, it seems like neither are going to be considering each other through romantic eyes anytime soon.
However, that doesn’t mean romance can’t happen between the two of them at some point: Lucy and Tim originally started as rookie and mentor before season 4 began planting the seeds of romance, leading to the pair kissing in the finale. While this doesn’t mean Celina and Miles will share the same fate, it’s still a possibility for the far-flung future.
Right now, though, it seems The Rookie doesn’t have any plans to build a romance between the two characters. Luckily, this will make their dynamic living together more interesting since it means the storyline won’t be going in a predictable direction. Either way, it sounds like it’ll still bring the pair closer together as friends.
